Cannot get Home Sharing -> Share photos with Apple TV with my Photos library to work in Catalina

After upgrading my iMac to macOS Catalina Version 10.15, I cannot get Home Sharing -> Share photos with Apple TV with my Photos library. This was working through iTunes before the OS upgrade.

Apple TV "Computers" app is working with Music, Movies, TV Shows, and Home Videos that were imported into my iTunes library before the upgrade to Catalina. Only Photos is not working. Software is up to date on the Apple TV.

I have had the same problems since upgrading to Catalina yesterday with photos not appearing in Computers on my Apple TV Gen 3 (which also kept telling me that I needed to enable sharing on the now defunct iTunes!)

So this is how I managed to solve the problem: System Preferences > Sharing > Home sharing > Share photos with Apple TV > Choose > Select albums to share (choose in batches of around 6 folders per time or it will dummy spit). For Macs with old iPhoto Events move folders into Albums in Photos App or it won’t recognise them.

My 2012 iMac and 2013 MacBookPro are now best mates with the Apple TV App and I hope this solution works for someone else out there.

Me too!

I have over 1800 photos that for years via "Home Sharing" I could display these photos on my Apple TV and I, my family and visitors all LOVED seeing our photos on my TV via Apple TV when visiting.

Now as the holiday events approach, we can no longer see these photos or other holiday specific photos on our Apple TV.

Just spent the entire afternoon trying to move the 1800 photos to a place where they could be displayed on Catalina/AppleTV, but no luck.

All these posts clearly show that many are having issues.

Come on Apple, you can do better than this. A ton of people leverage your Home Sharing to transport photos and home videos from their Apple computer to the Apple TV in various rooms. Your upgrade clearly didn't look into this functionality at all. Perhaps you are trying to force people to your cloud service, but instead will end up forcing people to Amazon. Very frustrating that a past time I've had with my family of viewing pictures on the TV with music is no disabled. It's honestly been a pain for quite some time, but now completely disabled. I've tried all the steps above and apparently the only solution for pictures is to manually select small folders of pictures because you didn't build it with the capacity to manage the entire Photo library. Now the home videos are also not working...only a small handful are coming through. Enough already, make this more user friendly and functional.

Same problem for me. I can open the library and see all menus: Music, Movies, Home Videos, Photos. That means that I have access to the library, but if I go into the Photos I see another screen saying: "To choose photos to share, open iTunes on your computer and go to File>Home Sharing."

I wonder if my Apple TV (3rd generation) really supports Catalina Home Sharing... My MacMini runs Catalina 10.15.

If any albums in the Photos library on your Mac are inside any folders that you created in Photos, then you may have to move those albums out of the folders and leave them in the top level of My Albums in Photos. Please see my message above your reply.

BTW, you no longer need to open iTunes to use Home Sharing. Did you go to System Preferences -> Sharing, click on Media Sharing, click on Home Sharing, click on Share photos with Apple TV, and then click the Choose... button and select any albums to share?

Thanks for your reply Jim,

I did some tests.

1- Choosing a folder instead of a library (Pictures folder) runs fine. I can see the pictures on ATV. That means that the setup and communications are fine.

2- I created a new library with only a picture. Without folders. Same name than the default to ensure that is the System Photo Library. It fails. Same error. So, in mi case, it seems not able to read/understand my upgraded photo library. It's a huge library with 40.000 pictures and videos..

I guess there is a kind of bug...
