Wifi issue with Macbook pro after updating to OS Catalina

Hi, I updated my Macbook pro 2012 15" to OS Catalina and I cannot use Wi-Fi. Wierdly, wifi diagnostics doesn't get opened either. Has anyone else been facing a similar issue or know of an existing solution.

Well this I can do for you, this I understand. And in another thread they explained it the same.

  1. Download the modified files (thanks Alex!) and unzip > you get a folder named WiFi_kexts
  2. Boot into Recovery Mode: restart your computer while pressing and holding cmd-R
  3. Open > Utilities > Terminal via Menu Bar (detailed instructions here)
  4. Type csrutil disable and hit return
  5. Type reboot and hit return > computer reboots normally
  6. Open > Utilities > Terminal and enter cd and hit the space bar (don't hit return)
  7. Drag the folder WiFi_kexts onto the Terminal window and hit return
  8. In Terminal, enter sudo mount -uw / and hit return, then enter your user password and hit return
  9. Enter sudo cp -r IO80211Family.kext /System/Library/Extensions/  and hit return
  10. Enter sudo cp -r IO80211FamilyV2.kext /System/Library/Extensions/  and hit return
  11. Right-click on Kext Utility in the folder WiFi_kexts and choose open, click open in the following dialog, authenticate with your password
  12. Wait for Kext Utility to complete – this took maybe two minutes on my setup, and I got an error message in the end, as well as "All done"
  13. Reboot your computer and enjoy WiFi in Catalina
  14. If you want to turn on SIP again you can boot into recovery mode again and enter csrutil enable (hit return) reboot (hit return)

I have done all this and I still did not get the driver to work, in other words I still have the same problem :(

But I hope this will work for you Prashant2908 Try that and let us know!

Does some one have any news regarding a solution regarding this problem? Everyone still has the same problem

-Wi-Fi is turned off

-Wi-FI icon in top meny is infinitely looking for network

IMPORTANT INFO

-After the Catalina upgrade there was NO problem

-After the small update on 15 october the problem occured!!

Possible solutions suggested:

-Create another location (Wi-Fi is not listed, no solution)

-Remove the Wi-Fi with the (-) sign and then add it again (Wi-Fi is not listed, next step, re-install Mac OS Catalina)

-After re-installation Wi-Fi is still turned off (no solution)

Other solution suggested:

-Creating new SSID's (I can't see any of the 15 SSID's in range, why create a new one?)

Someone got it fixed.....but:

[chuck abrams] Mentioned on the forums, that he went to the genius bar, they did something regarding something that was opening upon start, something was doen, issue resolved..........but the thing that caused it was not mentioned :O :(

Everyone with these problems have the same software versions

CoreWLAN 13.0 (null)

System Informatiom: 12.0 (1355)

IO80211 Family 12.0 (1200.12.2b1)

@Applesupport Is there still no solution for this problem? Anyone? #Applepleasesolvethisasap

"Changing what Opens at startup" suggests that you may get relief by starting in Safe Mode (hold shift at startup).

Safe mode loads a little bit of software, then does a five minute disk repair, then selectively loads the minimal set of Apple-only extensions, Not including graphics acceleration, so screen updates will be wonky and slow, but ultimately accurate. Your Userid and password is required, even if you normally auto-login.

Safe Mode takes defaults for everything it can, but changes you make in Safe Mode will "stick" in regular mode.

"Works in Safe Mode; fails in regular mode" implicates something you added.

Also in safe mode the problem is still there.

EXTRA INFORMATION:

When you install Catalina you have a WiFi adapter present. But I didn't have a Wi-Fi connection. When troubleshooting, and the Wi-Fi is removed from the network preferences, you can't get it back, because it does not have or detect any Wi-Fi interface.

I found a youtube movie that show the problem exactly which we have: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eptD8WRslXo

His solution was......get back to Mojave and stay away from Catalina! This isn't a proper solution :(

-Upgraded tot Catalina again => same issue

-Installed the Mojave version 2 Drivers with the Key Utility => same issue => no WiFi, no WiFi device

Any other suggestions to help us people out with these issues?!

You still have a software problem, as the versions of CoreWLAN and CoreWLANKit and MenuExtra are still showing ((null)) should be something like this [from my MacPro running Mojave]:

  Software Versions:

  CoreWLAN: 13.0 (1375.2)

  CoreWLANKit: 13.0 (1375.2)

  Menu Extra: 13.0 (1380.2)

macbook air early 2015 13 inch 2.2 ghz i7 processor. This is affecting all mac laptops. obviously a bug in catalina, everyone has the problem after upgrading, when you attempt to connect to public wifi (library, coffee shop). The typical permission screen does not pop up. Come on Apple, get a Catalina update and get this fixed!! Major pain!!!!

Nov 16, 2019 3:28 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Thank you for the reply Grant, but with all due respect.....'a commonly-suggested "fix" is to try in Safe Mode.' That's like saying something without saying anything. Some have already tried that but with no luck or no idea where to look or what to look for.

We are hoping that people can give us suggestions that are a bit more specific.

I find it hard that there still is no solution for this. And I strongly agree with 175Leo193......Let Apple update Catalina and fix this. Or Apple could make a rectification that Catalina does not fully support the models that we have.

A letdown to have Apple release a software that wasn’t troubleshooted enough. I miss Steve Jobs and his insistence on perfection. Apple controls its hardware and software. Still not having a solution shows that either they have no access to their own older laptops to troubleshoot or just don’t care enough. I downgraded and everything works fine now.
