Wifi issue with Macbook pro after updating to OS Catalina

Hi, I updated my Macbook pro 2012 15" to OS Catalina and I cannot use Wi-Fi. Wierdly, wifi diagnostics doesn't get opened either. Has anyone else been facing a similar issue or know of an existing solution.

Well this I can do for you, this I understand. And in another thread they explained it the same.

  1. Download the modified files (thanks Alex!) and unzip > you get a folder named WiFi_kexts
  2. Boot into Recovery Mode: restart your computer while pressing and holding cmd-R
  3. Open > Utilities > Terminal via Menu Bar (detailed instructions here)
  4. Type csrutil disable and hit return
  5. Type reboot and hit return > computer reboots normally
  6. Open > Utilities > Terminal and enter cd and hit the space bar (don't hit return)
  7. Drag the folder WiFi_kexts onto the Terminal window and hit return
  8. In Terminal, enter sudo mount -uw / and hit return, then enter your user password and hit return
  9. Enter sudo cp -r IO80211Family.kext /System/Library/Extensions/  and hit return
  10. Enter sudo cp -r IO80211FamilyV2.kext /System/Library/Extensions/  and hit return
  11. Right-click on Kext Utility in the folder WiFi_kexts and choose open, click open in the following dialog, authenticate with your password
  12. Wait for Kext Utility to complete – this took maybe two minutes on my setup, and I got an error message in the end, as well as "All done"
  13. Reboot your computer and enjoy WiFi in Catalina
  14. If you want to turn on SIP again you can boot into recovery mode again and enter csrutil enable (hit return) reboot (hit return)

I have done all this and I still did not get the driver to work, in other words I still have the same problem :(

But I hope this will work for you Prashant2908 Try that and let us know!

apparently Apple is unhappy with this method of solution and blocked a thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250728478...

nevertheless, the solution is not working for me

i personally have a MacBook Air Mid-2013, which is also facing the same issue as mentioned in all Replies... but I hope Apple should at least take a look on all this logging...

you can check your logs by looking for "Console" application in spotlight or launchpad

also this issue is resolved and reappeared from time to time regardless shutting down or sleeping (closing the lid) of my MacBook... so the WiFi connection of mine is purely based on luck currently...

It's a 15-inch Mid-2015 Retina MacBook Pro, You can easily search the support forums for similar issues even ones that contain the machine's specs, it seems like a problem that hits models of all kinds (iMacs, MacBook Pros, Mac Minis, etc) - unfortunately most of them weren't even replied once...

Here's a link for a search that contains tons of almost identical issues to this one

You seem to have Hardware showing, so this may not be the same problem as others. You should probably start a new discussion.

You may just have to re-specify what Network to join.

There is also an excellent but little-used feature that lets you repeat a basket of Network settings in one menu-choice:

How to use network locations on your Mac - Apple Support

For no Hardware, suggestions include deleting and re-adding the interface as described above, and restarting your Mac. You could also try in Safe Mode.

I have not been able to discern a Trend that follows any particular Hardware disappearing.

Apple is not here. Apple Support Communities is a User-to-User support forum. If other users can not help you think of a fix, No further help is likely to be forthcoming using this medium. There are no standard mechanisms for escalating problems to Apple Support from here, and Apple Engineering and Marketing Movers and Shakers do NOT monitor these forums looking for trends and outstanding issues.

DO NOT "wait for Apple to provide a fix". Unless and until a large number of users present their issues through standard problem-reporting channels, Apple does not know there is a problem, and is NOT working on a fix. Being selfish is the best policy, getting yours fixed helps everyone.

If advice supplied here does not provide resolution, You must take additional steps to resolve your issues. Contact Apple support directly through one of these methods:

• contact telephone support (free for 90 days with a new Mac, of for three years with AppleCare purchase)

• make an appointment at the genius bar at an Apple-owned store for hardware evaluation and advice (free anytime, but after five years parts may no longer be available).

• initiate an Online chat

• Visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider (there may be an "evaluation fee", but if they perform any service for a fee, ask for a rebate of the evaluation fee).

If you want to send your preferences directly to Apple use the feedback links:

Hi, I have the exact problem. Not able to connect to WIFI since I upgraded to Catalina. I was hope Apple would fix the issue with an upgrade but that did not happen. Still suffering with no WIFI.

I am currently using a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) with 2.9 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7.

System Report > Network > Wifi as under:

Software Versions:

CoreWLAN: 13.0 ((null))

CoreWLANKit: 13.0 ((null))

Menu Extra: 13.0 ((null))

System Information: 12.0 (1355)

IO80211 Family: 12.0 (1200.12.2b1)

Diagnostics: 1.0 (910)

AirPort Utility: Not Installed

Guys on this thread may have found a possible solution - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250728478?answerId=251526924022&page=1

But, since I am an amateur, I have no idea about how to go about it beyond starting the MBP in Recovery Mode.

Any help would to appreciated.

There are a number of people who are having problems with connecting to WiFi using captive access points. The ones that pop up a menu when you try to access them, and asks you to accept the conditions. Are your problems solely on these captive access points, or also on access points that use a password but don't have an acceptance page? Previous versions of MacOS had auto-login and auto-join parameters for each known access point. Catalina only has auto-join. Try the following

  1. Go into System Preferences and select Network.
  2. Click the "Advanced" button
  3. Choose the WiFi tab at the top
  4. You should now see a list of known WiFi access points
  5. Find the point that you are trying to connect to, and use the + and - keys below the list to remove it from the list.
  6. Turn off WiFi and quit Safari
  7. Do a shutdown, wait 30 seconds, and restart the computer
  8. See if it works now

People have also suggested creating a new Location on the Network page and trying to logon using the new location.

Let me know how it goes.

I have a similar issue, I think. What nobody else mentioned is that the WiFi icon in the top menu bar is infinitely looking for a network. Often together with a spinning beach ball cursor.

Yesterday, before the small update, but after installing Catalina, there were no issues.

The issue is at work, where I even have rebooted the wifi network. But others on other operating systems have no problems. Also my iPhone has no problem connecting to the network. My MacBook Air (2015) is the only machine with Catalina.

A personal hotspot on my iPhone is my workaround, works flawlessly...

System Information says:

And a long list with Local Wi-Fi Networks follows.

I have a MBP - 13, Late 2014.

I got this issue after the Oct 15th update as well. Now, I deleted all my files, clean installed macOS Catalina... still nothing.

I still got no wifi Indicator. Cannot find wifi in network preferences and reports shows me that the wifi interface isn't available at all.

If I go to console to check wifi log, here's what I can see.

Its been a horribly wrong choice to choose public beta updates. Even after a clean stable install, it doesn't work. I will try installing Mojave back again.

One solution that could be tried is to use

System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi ...

Under the list of interfaces, there is a Plus[+] Minus[-] and a gear.

Your Wi-Fi is already not working, so there is nothing to lose. Try selecting Wi-Fi and hit minus[-]. Then use the Plus[+] and add it Wi-Fi back to the list.

Then If it does not perk up right away, try turning it off and back on again.

The let us know if anything changes, and what the status becomes.

It seems that my WiFi issue is restricted to one location only. Elsewhere I have no problems: in the train, at home, in coffeecorners, parliament, university. Except that one office where I am the only user under Catalina. On a lower floor in that building WiFi works. I would like to choose 'Forget this network', but that option only appears once connected, right? Perhaps there is some Terminal command to the same effect?

Perhaps I should try creating a location for this spot. I last used the locations feature under OS 7 on my PowerBook 540c.
