Installed. So, cosmetically the bars are 'longer' i.e. the smallest bar is about half the length of the biggest, and there is less of a difference in size between each one and the next. If you see what I'm saying.
Signal wise, I had five bars before and now I have four.
DEATH GRIP TEST RESULT - signal still decays to one bar when held. So it is a hardware fault. I've verified using 3G speed tests that the signal is badly affected. This is a HARDWARE issue Apple, the sooner you realise that the better. I hold my phone in my left hand when browsing and use the right to control it. My palm naturally covers the suspect area, and signal degrades as a result.
where i used to get 5 bars, now i get 3. doing the death grip reduces it to 1 (where it dropped to previously). the bars are taller. wooptie-friggin-doo!
i wonder what they have up their sleeves for tomorrow...
Does:
+ Seem to adjust bar formula.
* In my static phone location:
- Was 3-5 Bars reception
- Is now 2-3 Bar reception
Does not (seem in the 30 minutes I have had the update):
+ Fix drop calls due to hand placement on antennae. (I'm left handed, sorry Steve Jobs can't change that cause of your product design flaw)
++ Fix the Proximity Sensor Issue
That's what they said they would fix. BUT, I think there's a ton of us anxious to hear if the proximity sensor issue was addressed? Stuck at work right now and can't download until later.
I assume it wouldn't be in the release notes since it was never really identified by Apple as an issue.
Fortunately I didn't have an problem with that sensor, but I made a test call and wasn't a problem - I'm sure someone will chime in with their findings who had the issue 🙂
Erm the press release said the firmware update would change the bar algorithm and the size of the bars. Apple didn't say it would do anything else. Seems the firmware does exactly what it says on the tin. Why are you suprised?
When I went to update I got a message saying there were purchases on the phone that should be added to iTunes before applying the update. I synced 3 times and still got the message each time I tried. So now I'm updating anyway. Not sure I understand.
(Getting the same thing on the iPad as well. Even after 2 syncs.. I'll proceed with that one too. Not sure what I'll see missing)
Look. This fix is not going to make people happy. BUT - It is the first step where Steve and the Apple Gang are now doing what they say they will do and it was "promised" in the press release.
I suspect we will see more hardware and software fixes coming fast after tomorrow's announcement.
That being said I wouldn't bet my paycheck on anything at this point......
It does change the bar formula and cosmetically change the bars some as well.
Did the baseband modem version change, cannot remember what it was.
This change did exactly what the release note stated, different bar calculation, now over to apple tomorrow to deliver. I hope the content is based on some engineering input rather than the suspect pr words they came out with last week.
