Battery not charging after updating to macOS Catalina in my MacBook Pro.. Did the SMC reset but no change the issue.
Talked with Support. Ran through this process:
Called Apple Tech Support. With them I did the following:
1) Ran Diagnostics. - Everything checked fine.
2) Reset SMC. - No go.
3) Reset Parameter Ram. - No go.
3) Tried to reinstall OS to current version (Option-Command-R) but could not because the install wouldn't work because you could not charge. Could not update without the computer plugged in.
4) At a loss and crying now. Brand spanking new. Ugh.
5) Now have to send Mac back to Apple. They will not guarantee a brand new computer over the phone. Said maybe a refurbished model. They don't know.
6) I repeat, this was right out of the box. Brand spanking new. Could not handle Catalina. I guess.
I am having this issue as well on my 2018 MacBook Pro 15" as well. I have an LG monitor with Thunderbolt3 that charged my laptop perfectly fine in 10.13 and 10.14. Ever since "upgrading" to 10.15 though, it will barely charge it if at all. I'm not replacing my monitor because it is working perfectly fine. This problem didn't start till the upgrade to 10.15 so I wouldn't replace any adapters. They are just trying to point fingers at everything but themselves.
I've got a team member with a 2017 Macbook Pro 13 (non-touch bar) who just upgraded and is having this problem. I've got a 2018 Macbook Air and it's fine though. I'm telling my team not to upgrade for the time being though.
Another follow-up, came home to a battery at 31% this evening, and this is after I installed the Catalina supplemental update last evening and went to bed.
Unplugging it and replugging it into a different port had no effect. Still won't charge. Restarted the Macbook, then changed ports again. Now it's charging.
Meh.
Hmmm. Interesting for sure. I rebooted with support on the phone multiple times. Used different ports and also used multiple charging devices. I wonder if it's just the new model. Ugh. Sent the box in today. Very frustrating.
Didn't take too long for me to do another follow-up. I walked away from my Macbook for a bit, and the display shut off due to inactivity as it should. Upon waking it, the battery hit 65% and stopped charging. And just now, as I've started typing this paragraph, it's bouncing back and forth between "Battery is charging" and "More than 10 hours".
I habe a dell d6000 and what happens for me is that ill unplug to go to a meeting, then replug in and it wont charge and also wont display on external monitors, then try another port and occasionally it might work, but 75 pct of the time i have to reboot while its plugged in to fix the issue
I'm having the same issue and one "workaround" I found is to start charging with a regular charger, then unplug the charger cable and connect the D6000 cable and... charging works. This is valid just as long as the interval between unplug-plug is short. I suspect a bug in Catalina at this point...
UPDATE:
In my previous post I mentioned all of the steps I took to come to the conclusion I did, but something changed the more I played around with configurations and my system.
With the same configuration noted under my previous comment (without the monitor attached), I noticed charging would cease for small durations when the system would be under heavy load. For example, when I reopened my previously saved session of Google Chrome, which amounts to over 20 tabs, the charging would stop until the browser was fully loaded, and then it would start again.
I also tried reconnecting my HDMI monitor again once my Macbook charged to 60% battery life. At first (for about 1 - 2 minutes) it stopped charging, but then (with the monitor still connected) it began charging once again.
So... what does this mean? Perhaps this is actually related to the POWER the laptop is consuming relative to the charge. Since attaching the external monitor consumed about 1 - 2 minutes worth of configuration stabilization (i.e. I couldn't really do anything for about that long because the computer was "thinking" while the new display rearranged my desktop, etc.), I'm wondering if this is actually a power management issue instead. When the system is stressed it simply stops charging.
Just an update from me, i updated the firmware on the d6000 to the latest version, no noticeable difference for me. As with previous post I have also noticed it seems to work more often after the port was recently used for charging. This is some finicky. In my situation its charging as well as external monitors.
I have a Mid-2013 MacBook Pro 15" Retina. After the Catalina update the battery shows not charging but the AC power does
work.
The AC Adapter in the System Information shows plugged in, but no ID. It's all zeros. Makes me wonder if it is a security
hiccup. The battery stays about the same, but when I do anything with heavy graphics, such as PS, the battery starts to discharge slightly. I know this is related to Catalina, but I can't figure out what software component could have done this.
I think it is a combination of security (the adapters have an authorization handshake) and the power management system.
I want it fixed. No reason this should have happened. Do I send it in? Reload Mojave? It's been like this since July when I put the Beta on. Thought it would have been fixed by now. Every update the same thing....
My Macbook won’t even turn on anymore. I am going to call customer service tomorrow, but I suspect they’re going to expect me to cough up some cash even though I had zero issues prior to Catalina. Guess we’ll see.
It’s entirely possible that my Macbook is truly dead, but I find the timing of it all rather suspect.
Ok - Listen to this gang. Sent the brand new computer in for repair. They replaced the logic board and the touch bar strip on the computer. I got the computer in, configured the computer, updated to Catalina and everything fine now. Not sure what you can take out of this except it could have been a hardware issue. I did the exact same process as I did before except it worked this time around. Problem solved for me but I understand everyone's issues. Keep plugging away! - JC
Adding some additional information: When I am on the power adapter, my computer sometimes doesn't charge. When I click the battery icon in the top right of the screen, it appears to say that the battery is not charging, but that my power source is the power adaptor. In some cases, the computer appears to actually be discharging the battery despite the stated power source.
In system information -> power, the battery and AC adapter information appear inconsistent when this is happening. I believe the charger is supposed to draw 87W. I have seen it listed as drawing a lower wattage (don't remember the numbers).
Interestingly enough, as I type this, my computer is charging properly, but it doesn't seem to recognize my external screen.
Called Apple Support and they want me to fork over $876.93 before they’ll even take a look at it if I do the mail-in option. I’m a bit irritated since I understand that the thing is out of warranty, but shouldn’t the charge come after the problem is determined? That’s enough to just purchase a refurbished Macbook, or be most of the way towards buying a used version of the exact same Macbook I have. That’s utterly insane.
Gonna have to think about my options here.
It is definitely connected to Catalina upgrade.
Before I upgraded my D6000 worked fine.
After the upgrade to Catalina it stopped charging through the D6000.
I tried 3 other D6000, and the last one allowed my macbook to charge again. So that was 1 out of 4 D6000.
I then upgraded the firmware on my D6000 and I could charge again on it. Upgraded the last 2 D6000 and they started allowing charge.
I believe it something with the handshake (between Catalina and charger) that has broken in Catalina.
