Battery not charging after macOS Catalina Update

Battery not charging after updating to macOS Catalina in my MacBook Pro.. Did the SMC reset but no change the issue.
As mentioned by @nicrankin I have plugged directly after removing all the laptop covers and casings which I have used to protect the MacBook Pro from scratches and it worked perfectly. I guess sometimes casings/ covers do not allow the plug to properly fit it even there are enough spaces for USB-C ports. Thanks for all the feedbacks.
I have this issue as well. If I do a SMC I sometimes get it to charge from the Dell Displaylink, but if I unplug it and then plug it back in it wont charge. If I shut the MacBook Pro 2018 down and leave it with the USBc cord in it will sometimes charge.
Normal charger works.
UPDATE:
In my previous post I mentioned all of the steps I took to come to the conclusion I did, but something changed the more I played around with configurations and my system.
With the same configuration noted under my previous comment (without the monitor attached), I noticed charging would cease for small durations when the system would be under heavy load. For example, when I reopened my previously saved session of Google Chrome, which amounts to over 20 tabs, the charging would stop until the browser was fully loaded, and then it would start again.
I also tried reconnecting my HDMI monitor again once my Macbook charged to 60% battery life. At first (for about 1 - 2 minutes) it stopped charging, but then (with the monitor still connected) it began charging once again.
So... what does this mean? Perhaps this is actually related to the POWER the laptop is consuming relative to the charge. Since attaching the external monitor consumed about 1 - 2 minutes worth of configuration stabilization (i.e. I couldn't really do anything for about that long because the computer was "thinking" while the new display rearranged my desktop, etc.), I'm wondering if this is actually a power management issue instead. When the system is stressed it simply stops charging.
Ok - Listen to this gang. Sent the brand new computer in for repair. They replaced the logic board and the touch bar strip on the computer. I got the computer in, configured the computer, updated to Catalina and everything fine now. Not sure what you can take out of this except it could have been a hardware issue. I did the exact same process as I did before except it worked this time around. Problem solved for me but I understand everyone's issues. Keep plugging away! - JC
Seems like when I charge through my multi-port hub that's what "breaks" the port. Once broken the port is dead. Right now I have 3 use-c ports functioning. I already took mine to an authorized service center and they were able to fix everything but when I used the multi-port to charge through it "killed" that port again. Before Catalina I could charge, run my external monitor and do usb drives using this multi-port hub with no problems.
Another update. So I had a nonfunctional MacBook Pro for well over a week. Neither official charger worked anymore. Today, a third party charger arrived from Amazon. Plugged it in, MacBook immediately started working again. Both official chargers work again too. It’s like nothing ever happened. My MacBook is back to a full charge and running.
This is absolutely, 100% a software problem. I have no idea when or if the official chargers will randomly stop working again but whatever. Think I’m gonna sell the MacBook and go full time on the iPad Pro at this point. I already got used to being without it.
Yes. This is a Catalina software issue. After updating to 10.15.1 my charting issues seemed fixed. Unfortunately the same problem is still repeating when I charge through my Satechi milt-port hub. Once again this never was an issue for me before Catalina.
Same here - 15" Macbook Pro 2017 - with Touchbar.
Immediately after Catalina (10.15.5 upgrade - and since the first O/S reboot, the battery is not recognized, and not showing in the status bar.
FAN is on FULL SPEED ALL THE TIME.
Apple Diagnostics reports either a problem with battery, or the SMC controller.
Previous to the upgrade the battery life was ok, with plenty of capacity, and would hold a charge for an entire day. I don't believe the battery has issues.
None of the SMC and NVRAM Reset procedures resulted in any change.
The fan comes on at boot-up, and remains on
SAFE mode login did not change anything.
The CPU is 95% idle, and no unwanted processes running.
This is surely a result of the upgrade, and the Apple Support tech advised me to have the H/W checked out, at a service center. Problem is that I am traveling with limited access to support centers.
What now ?
Quick update, I switched to a different port on the left side and it self-corrected (again). I'll post when it seemingly randomly chooses to stop charging once again.
I have a Mid-2013 MacBook Pro 15" Retina. After the Catalina update the battery shows not charging but the AC power does
work.
The AC Adapter in the System Information shows plugged in, but no ID. It's all zeros. Makes me wonder if it is a security
hiccup. The battery stays about the same, but when I do anything with heavy graphics, such as PS, the battery starts to discharge slightly. I know this is related to Catalina, but I can't figure out what software component could have done this.
I think it is a combination of security (the adapters have an authorization handshake) and the power management system.
I want it fixed. No reason this should have happened. Do I send it in? Reload Mojave? It's been like this since July when I put the Beta on. Thought it would have been fixed by now. Every update the same thing....
Having this issue too on my 2017 MBP, 13"
Just started today, noticed that the battery icon said it was charging despite not being plugged in. Oddly enough, plugging in the charger did not charge the MacBook until I had tried every port multiple times, which somehow fixed the not charging issue.
Battery still continues to display the charging icon at all times, I suspect Catalina is to blame for this as I hadn't had any issues before updating. The computer is a refurbished model that is less than 3 months old, this is ridiculous
EDIT: Seems to have a lot of issues now with charging, notably calculating the 'Until Full' time with wildly varying results, jumping back and fourth by hours seemingly at random. Also having trouble getting the computer to actually charge, with the charger often failing to charge the computer at random
brand new MacBook Pro 13 2019 (as in I bought it today) was charging then updated to Catalina. It stopped charging the second Catalina was installed and hasn’t charged since. This issue is 100% Catalina. Apple you need to pull this update and roll back everyone’s computer. This issue is bricking people’s computers. If they can’t charge then even if you do update Catalina how are they meant to update it.
Late 2017 MB Air, exact same issue. My battery needed a charge and it will not accept a charge from any MagSafe adapter. Updated to Catalina less than a week ago. No issues with device prior. No peripherals. Very very unfortunate circumstances. If I eat the $999 price tag this could be the end of my over 20 year relationship with Apple laptops.
Apple, please address this issue.
I am sad to report that I received word from an Apple/Mac certified tech today that indeed the logic board on my 2017 MB Air that has been in service for 23 months fried less than a week after updating to Catalina. The device never, ever came anywhere near moisture or was never dropped or misused in any way. So, after 17 years as a loyal customer to Apple for all of my computing needs at some cost of nearly $30,000.00 in total, I will never purchase another Mac product again. As each device I now own begins to age out, as all devices will do, I will look back to the failure of Apple at this point and not replace that product with another Mac product. If laptops have become disposable devices after less than 2 years of service, I will purchase similar quality products at much lower price points.
Shame on Apple.
This thread is getting a lot of traction. Share this and send messages to Apple via Twitter, Instagram and Facebook with screenshots of this. Hopefully they will finally give it the needed attention.
This is pain in the ***. I have updated my new MacBook Pro with touchscreen for 3 times since the release of Catalina, all the three times after updation I had this battery recharging issue. Every time I had to do so many juggling including numerous SMCs. All the times only solution was to keep the laptop till battery dried out and freezing itself for couple of hours.
AND I KNOW EVEN APPLE SUPPORT TEAM WONT CONSIDER AS AN ISSUE AS MACBOOK IS A “CASH COW”.
