I wish that I had the answer for you.

You might try posting your question in the new MacOS Catalina forum. Click on the "We want to here from you" link in the announcement at the top of this forum page. You can also call Apple Support by clicking on the "Contact Support" item at the top right hand corner of the forum page. Then navigate to iMovie and there will be a phone number there for you to call. The Apple Support people are pretty savvy.

Thanks Rich, I tried your suggestion twice (boot in safe, shutdown, reboot in normal) but to no avail, it still won't record audio. l have set sound preferences for both built in mic and external mic, and nothing. When I watched the iMovie demo, the mic icon seems to flash in rainbow color but for me it is only black outline, doesn't seem to be getting any level at all. Built in and external mics do work in Photo Booth and Quicktime so my workaround is to shoot in Photo Booth or Quicktime and import to iMovie to edit for now, but no voiceovers? there has to be a fix for this! Thanks if you can help me figure this out!
