catalina does not complete shutdown
Catalina does not complete shutdown on iMac. Desktop and menubar disappear, but Catalina Island background wallpaper remains on screen. Just sits there.

Force quite by holding down the Power key for 6+ seconds. Then boot into Safe Mode (How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support) by booting with the Shift key held down and reboot normally.
NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing some system cache cleaning, volume verifying and directory repairing.

Roger, thank you! I also have Time Machine so tried your solution and it worked. Wish I had consulted this forum days ago!
I spoke too soon. Nothing is resolved. My iMac keeps restarting after shutdown. INFURIATING!
I have Time Machine. I tried disconnecting it and had a successful shutdown - but only ONCE. The problem has returned.
Wow. Very disconcerting. Wish I had more info to offer...
Agree. This was the one that pushed me over the edge. The quality is just not there anymore in my eyes. Things that should not be broken are broken. Makes me hesitant to buy another Mac.

nope !! after a couple days, it's all the same (sigh)
system dont shutdown
yeah mines actually worse now, my Dock is always visible and now when I shutdown it hides but leaves an exact copy of it and does the same thing
No, Safe Mode seemed to return everything to normal. That is, until the next issue - which always seems to come along within a few days.
Heres the report
Could it be Chrome update daemon?
This etrecheck report hasn't full disk permission
Google data mines, Kaspersky works for Russia, Cyberghost keeps logs, it doesn't matter. This still happens with no software installed whatsoever.
Is there a system check that can analyze and release a report during (or after) the shutting process? Thks
There may be some report available thru the Console on that but it's above my pay grade.
