Catalina does not complete shutdown on iMac. Desktop and menubar disappear, but Catalina Island background wallpaper remains on screen. Just sits there.

Force quite by holding down the Power key for 6+ seconds. Then boot into Safe Mode (How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support) by booting with the Shift key held down and reboot normally.
NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing some system cache cleaning, volume verifying and directory repairing.
Ive added a video in slow-motion on how it looks. This was on Version 10.15.3 but the problem hasn't changed much, only difference now is that the island wallpaper doesn't change AND the dock hides but leaves like a copy. Then hangs and all you is is the colors you noticed in the video. https://youtu.be/6p0GrUu8stU
Its systemwide, did the additional user and same thing happens. I also want to note that I've installed a fresh copy of Catalina via bootable usb erasing everything form the hdd. I also though the problem was due to some 32bit program or some other program messing around like Android File Transfer, Powerpoint, etc. But no, after a fresh installation of Catalina the problem persisted.
Its weird cause with this particular problem I think I'm alone in this one. I have friends that have the same A1708 non Touch Bar model that I have and they don't have this issue. Ive also tried resetting the SMC and some other thing I can't remember the name now.
And by the way, I'm pretty sure this is software related, cause Mojave works perfectly and there's a difference between Catalina 10.15.3 and 10.15.4, something they did changed the behavior of the island background and changed the way the dock now leaves a random copy of it. I bet they're not getting something right.
Hi, on my A1707 the shutting down its the same shown in this video: https://youtu.be/6p0GrUu8stU
I havo also install OS X 10.15.4 as new (pure installation from usb), without any program: the problem persist. Moreover, during the shut down, the dock flickering two times, se this video: https://youtu.be/u4x9LMVmq00
Is there any solution for fix?
Thanks
Sorry Old Toad, i have the same problem. In my situation catalina is install as new (pure installation from usb), without any program: the problem persist. I don't think thats the problem is kaspersky or google daemon.
Well, my lone voice will presumably be heard, but they point out personal responses will not be made. When my daughter persuaded me to migrate from a PC to a Mac ten years ago, I was thrilled. No bugs, no crashes, no viruses, no spyware. Everything just WORKED. Now I feel like I'm back where I started with my crappy PC. My iMac causes me some sort of grief every single day.
You are right. Ten years ago, an update was always an improvement on the computer; today, on the contrary, you cannot know how it will end. A day will come when we will be afraid to do the next update!
Actually that day you're talking about is how i felt before upgrading to Catalina. A friend of mine who started with macs when snow leopard was out, suggested to wait and not upgrade real quick cause i could encounter various issues, he was right. Sad that this is my first MacBook ever and my first upgrade ever, I've always been windows and never had these type of problems. I can understand a few bugs here and there, programming an OS must be difficult, adding new features can sometimes break other programs but this has been going since day 1 of Catalina. It needs to be patched. Pronto
Here is the last chance we have: https://www.apple.com/feedback/macos.html
I am sending two feedbacks a day, someone will have to answer us!
Ps. I understand the disappointment of the moment, but let's not exaggerate ;-) windows will never be at the level of a Mac: i will never go back ;-)
Don't worry, someone will solve it shortly. Nice day!
I agree, would never go back to a PC. Moral of this story: NEVER upgrade to a brand new OS until Apple has sorted the bugs - which seems to take at least a year.
Nice to know there are plenty of users out there who share my frustration.
Hey fellows, I have upgraded to 10.15.3 and still having the same annoying issues. Sleep / Wake function lets crash OS X, I turned Power Nap off and now that part seems to be solved. BUT, I cannot shut down my 16" MBP properly, as described by origin post writer.
I don't know if Apple guys will read this, but OS X Catalina is really a mess. I mean the features are great. But the whole thing is just buggy and feels more like beta than something final. I am so tired of this updating craziness. Please, invest more time AND TEST YOUR SOFTWARE and don't waste our time. I would rather prefer to update once every 6 months but with 100% tested software. Last 6 months felt like replacing bugs by other bugs.
Dear Apple Team, really, get your stuff together.
Have not attempted shut-down for a few days so thought I would try tonight. At 9 PM I started. I have gone through the laborious restart and reporting error 3 times. This has taken 40 minutes. It is time to face the fact my iMac will not shut down again unless Apple fixes this or I die, whichever comes first. Being 72 years old in the age of coronavirus, I'm pretty sure I will die first.
Your problem seems to be worst than some of us here. At least our Macs shutdown but not in the way they should. Best I can describe is, like pulling the plug on something and suddenly shuts off. Theres no transition to the process.
In Mojave, dock leaves then screen turns black but with the backlight on, loading grey circle at the bottom of the screen, screens shuts backlight and then keyboard light shuts too.
Hello everybody, updated to Catalina 10.15.5, only change is now the dock properly hides but the screen problem still persists. Im just gonna quit on this one and hope that macOS 10.16 which should be coming this year changes the whole system and hopefully fixing the screen issue, ill upload a video later during the day.
Same deal here on MacBook Pro mid-2015 since upgrading to Catalina (along with a long list of other issues).
