I was having this problem on a 15" MBP 2019 with the Pro Vega 20, then again on the 16" 2019 MBP with the 8GB Radeon I swapped it for.

Basically, your Catalina install comes with a bunch of extensions for running RAID hard drives (most users won't ever do this). Something about at least one of them is broken. I haven't worked out exactly which ones cause the problem, but they can all be safely removed if you don't use RAID HDDs.

They can be found in MacintoshHD>Library>Extensions. Make sure you're looking the right right Library folder, you want the one on in Macintosh HD, NOT the one under your username. I made a backup of them just in case, then cleared out the following .kext files:

ACS6x

ArcMSR

ATTOCelerityFC8

ATTOExpressSASHBA2

ATTOExpressSASRAID2

CalDigitHDProDrv

HighPointIOP

HighPointRR

PromiseSTEX

SoftRAID

Since I was on a very fresh install, I expect these are all the ones which come with Catalina as standard. My machine has since been waking from sleep successfully and quickly every time, even with multiple displays and USB-C devices plugged in.

I have a 2013 MBP that began failing under Catalina. I bought the new MBP 16 back in December to deal with the issue. Irony is now the old 2013 which I gave to my son is now crash free. My MBP16 has the problem now.

I worked with Apple support to resolve the crashing MBP16 4 weeks ago. Reset SMC, Reset NVRAM, then reinstall latest Catalina. It worked, no problems for 3 weeks. Then I did something I don’t do daily. I did photo work and cleaned up the library in Photos. Imports of hi-res images from Nikon cameras, 20GB or so in. Afterwards I cleaned my library of old images over the last 3 months, 60GB of deletes or so. It began crashing during sleep after that.

My son uses the old MBP 13 for school via web and some Pages work. Zero photo work, and zero crashes. It has been stable on the same operating system that crashed for me all the time.

Whats the difference? Not linking and pushing massive files to and from iCloud. With my latest crashing issue, Photos had quit communicating with iCloud and would not sync or update. So the failure was common between iOS failing and Photos failing.

I just repeated the resets and the reinstall for the second time on the MBP16. Now photos is working properly again and I expect my Catalina crashes will be fixed as well. I will update after I give the OS some working days without any major Photo work.

If you are having troubles, try the double reset and the reinstall. Then disable your iCloud photos for a few days to see if you can go crash free.

Best Regards,

Kevin

I would like to report a similar issue. I am on imac late 2015. I just noticed it when I had upgraded to Catalina(i had some other issues so i thought it could be something else) . I called Apple and worked with a senior advisor who helped me run a bunch of tests and we noticed that the problem only happened when I have my OWC hard drive docking station attached via thunderbolt. In the docking station I have a couple of SSD's. He said they were drawing to much power and causing the crash. That did make sense to me. I have never had this happen with them(although I did start using a large SSD recently) I think it should worked based on the specs of the stations. My next step was to call OWC and find out if they had reports of a similar problem. It appears there's an underlying OS problem if everyone else is having the same problem since Catalina. I never had this problem before that I recall so it appears it is yes perhaps only triggered in this way but clearly something is happening with Catalina.

I have a new 16" MBP with very similar "wake from sleep" issues. Screens dead, computer rebooting during sleep, etc. None of the recommended voodoo worked until the 10.15.2 update. I've been through two extended sleep/wake cycles now. While there's still a little bit of system confusion on awakening - some on and off blinking of multiple monitors as well - there's been no rebooting while the machine was asleep, and at least on this admittedly small sample size of two cycles, the problem seems to have gone away.

This kernel panic or need for hard restart occurred several times a day for the past two weeks since I've had the new MBP, and I almost thought it was a problem with the hardware since it was so predictable. I think the jury is still out on whether this update actually fixed the issue, but since nothing else has changed on the system, I think it's a good bet (at least as long as the system remains stable for the next few weeks). Good luck if you're having this problem. I'd recommend the update and see if it helps.

MAJOR NEWS!

Apple just released 10.15.4 Supplemental Update. (This is a second 10.15.4 update.) By its brief description, it appears to be intended to fix most of the crashes reported in this thread, one of which was my issue: a USB bus-powered drive connected to a Type C port on my iMac.

I haven’t tested much at this point (just installed the update), but I can report that my Time Machine backups which had become ridiculously slow are now blazing fast!

Previously I’d noted that I was crashing when using a bus-powered drive but not when using a drive that was self-powered. The IMPORTANT difference, however, appears to be whether the drive was connected to a C (Thunderbolt 3) port (my bus-powered one) versus an ordinary USB 3.0 Type A port (the self-powered one).

I've had this problem since the 10.15.4 update (back in Feb?). I thought for half a day that the 10.15.5 update fixed it but no.

It could crash waking from sleep, and often using Photoshop 2020 and Illustrator 2020. The recent Adobe updates didn't help either.

This week I cloned my hard drive, spent hours finding a installer for 10.15.3, made a usb installer, wiped my machine and I was finally able to go back to 10.15.3 and move my files over.

Everything has been fine since.

Configuration

  • MacBook Pro 16" 2019
  • 2.6ghz i7
  • 32gb ram
  • 2tb SSD
  • AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB - Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB
  • LG 34UM95 Monitor
  • Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express Dock HD
  • Apple thunderbolt cable and Thunderbolt 3 adapter
  • Apple Magic Keyboard 2 and Trackpad
  • Wacom intuos tablet

I've lost loads of time and it's been a real pain in the behind, but I'm feeling hopeful now.

Catalina is definitely the catalyst for this sleep - crash cycle... just wish these kind of issues were published so we didn't waste time fault finding. I thought it was OneDrive app but when I installed amphetamine, it stopped!

Thank you @timjtim for that suggestion it worked a treat and saved me a trip do the Mac Doc.
