Hi GavinFoo,

Thanks for posting! I understand you might be having an issue with waking your MacBook Pro from sleep, and I'm glad to help.

To troubleshoot, I recommend starting with this resource: If your Mac doesn't sleep or wake when expected

"If your Mac doesn't wake when you expect

Your Mac might pause a few seconds before it wakes up. If it doesn't seem to wake at all, check for these possibilities:

  • Your screen brightness might be turned down.
  • If you're using an external display, your display might be turned off.
  • Your Mac might be in safe sleep. To wake from safe sleep, press the power button.
  • Check for a sleep indicator light, if applicable, and make sure that your Mac isn't turned off."

If this doesn't seem to apply to what's happening, try these troubleshooting steps below. Safe mode and the test user account in particular may be helpful in narrowing down the issue:

"If the previous steps don't work

These additional steps may help identify or resolve the issue:

  • Reset the SMC.
  • Reset NVRAM.
  • Disconnect external devices other than your Apple keyboard, mouse, and display. If that resolves the issue, gradually reconnect your devices, testing each time, until you find the device that is interfering with sleep. Then check the documentation that came with the device, or contact the device manufacturer.
  • Start up in Safe Mode to see if the issue is related to non-Apple startup items, login items, or kernel extensions.
  • Try to isolate the issue by using another user account."

Cheers!

Both my MacBook Pro (2014) and my i9 iMac 2019 are doing this. Thing in common. Catalina. This needs sorting out. The thing I always liked about my Macs was the stability compared with my works windows machines. Now that is gone. Wish I had not bought the new i9 iMac, with Vega 48 and saved half my money and bought a Dell or Asus or Lenovo desktop (insert any windows desktop name here). Shame Apple for issuing Catalina.

I totally agree. This is ridiculous and it is APPLE's issue. But yet they're letting us sit here and suffer for paying exorbitantly for their cheap *** products that don't work right while they sit there and take home a paycheck. I'm using this MacBook Pro even if it does crash every time it sleeps, until it dies. Then I'll use my company's computer and I'll never purchase another mac again. Apple has really done themselves in with me. And they offer no solution.

Same here with my MacBook Air 13 inch, 2017 model, if it sleeps for too long, it would just lock up after waking up, and it would just freeze the whole login screen, back when I purchased this Macbook installed with Mojave, this problem never happened. I

think this is a bug that needs to be fixed asap because constantly force shutting down a Mac or even a PC might corrupt data on the SSD/HDD making it unusable, I hope Apple will address this problem as soon as possible because my Macbook Air is my daily driver and if the software/drive gets corrupted due to the Sleep Wake doing weird stuff, I am going to get really disappointed because I have very important files on my Macbook and after power cycling it constantly, it is already doing some weird stuff such as Finder not starting up when logging in.

Update:

The service person found that there is a corrosion on the board, that causes the system kernel panic during deep sleep. After that part is replaced/fixed, no more crash during deep sleep. So, for you who encounter the same issue here, you may suffer the same issue.

But weird thing is, I never bring my macbook pro to a humid place like beach or not even hit or splashed by water at all. But then got corrosion. I can assume this is a part of hardware defect.

MAJOR NEWS!

Apple just released 10.15.4 Supplemental Update. (This is a second 10.15.4 update.) By its brief description, it appears to be intended to fix most of the crashes reported in this thread, one of which was my issue: a USB bus-powered drive connected to a Type C port on my iMac.

I haven’t tested much at this point (just installed the update), but I can report that my Time Machine backups which had become ridiculously slow are now blazing fast!

Previously I’d noted that I was crashing when using a bus-powered drive but not when using a drive that was self-powered. The IMPORTANT difference, however, appears to be whether the drive was connected to a C (Thunderbolt 3) port (my bus-powered one) versus an ordinary USB 3.0 Type A port (the self-powered one).

[FINAL]

Well just for your information. At the end, my service center ended up to replace the whole board (including CPU, Memory and SSD). And problem gone (of course). But from what they tested before replacing the whole board, the crash during wake was caused by a corrosion on the logic board. When they clean the corrosion, no more crash after wake.

Why they replaced the whole board was due to left side thunderbolts port doesn't work at all and difficult to replace only that part. That's why they decided to replace the whole board..

Well, for you who suffer from "CRASH ON WAKE", what I can suggest really:

Bring to Apple Service center to inspect (lucky if you still have warranty or extended warranty). And could be something similar to my case which is related to board issue.

I have a mid 2017 iMac 27” and have been having issues since purchase with external USB 3.0 storage causing the sleepwakefailure crashes as per this thread. I recently purchased a Samsung T5 Mini usb-c SSD which worked fine until the last 10.15.4 update (mentioning usb-c fixes).

Since applying this the issue has returned, but with USB-C the ports on the Mac stop working completely (power light comes on on the drive but drive is not seen) until the computer is power cycled which brings them back. If I connect the drive with USB-A while this is happening it works, but the computer still crashes with sleepwakefailure or very occasionally a kernel panic.

This is happening on my brand new MacBook Pro 16", which came with Catalina pre-installed. Crashes every single time on wakeup and several times a day at random for no obvious reason. I've tried running only Apple apps and the same happens, so that rules out third party s/w issues. There are no peripherals attached, so it isn't that either. Very frustrating, and making me regret buying a new PB that can't be downgraded to Mojave. Come on Apple: up your game!

That's exactly how my problems started happening, they replaced the battery and shortly after my machine became useless. They are very nice when you call them, they tried reaching drive, reinstalling, but nothing helped, my machine can only boot in safe mode, regular not hangs half way trough bootup screen/progress

I have a 2013 MBP that began failing under Catalina. I bought the new MBP 16 back in December to deal with the issue. Irony is now the old 2013 which I gave to my son is now crash free. My MBP16 has the problem now.

I worked with Apple support to resolve the crashing MBP16 4 weeks ago. Reset SMC, Reset NVRAM, then reinstall latest Catalina. It worked, no problems for 3 weeks. Then I did something I don’t do daily. I did photo work and cleaned up the library in Photos. Imports of hi-res images from Nikon cameras, 20GB or so in. Afterwards I cleaned my library of old images over the last 3 months, 60GB of deletes or so. It began crashing during sleep after that.

My son uses the old MBP 13 for school via web and some Pages work. Zero photo work, and zero crashes. It has been stable on the same operating system that crashed for me all the time.

Whats the difference? Not linking and pushing massive files to and from iCloud. With my latest crashing issue, Photos had quit communicating with iCloud and would not sync or update. So the failure was common between iOS failing and Photos failing.

I just repeated the resets and the reinstall for the second time on the MBP16. Now photos is working properly again and I expect my Catalina crashes will be fixed as well. I will update after I give the OS some working days without any major Photo work.

If you are having troubles, try the double reset and the reinstall. Then disable your iCloud photos for a few days to see if you can go crash free.

Best Regards,

Kevin
