I was having this problem on a 15" MBP 2019 with the Pro Vega 20, then again on the 16" 2019 MBP with the 8GB Radeon I swapped it for.

Basically, your Catalina install comes with a bunch of extensions for running RAID hard drives (most users won't ever do this). Something about at least one of them is broken. I haven't worked out exactly which ones cause the problem, but they can all be safely removed if you don't use RAID HDDs.

They can be found in MacintoshHD>Library>Extensions. Make sure you're looking the right right Library folder, you want the one on in Macintosh HD, NOT the one under your username. I made a backup of them just in case, then cleared out the following .kext files:

ACS6x

ArcMSR

ATTOCelerityFC8

ATTOExpressSASHBA2

ATTOExpressSASRAID2

CalDigitHDProDrv

HighPointIOP

HighPointRR

PromiseSTEX

SoftRAID

Since I was on a very fresh install, I expect these are all the ones which come with Catalina as standard. My machine has since been waking from sleep successfully and quickly every time, even with multiple displays and USB-C devices plugged in.

Catalina is the most in-stable OS since I switched from Windows to Mac 10 years ago. And I totally regret the update to it. Previous Moave just was fine. It is so bad that the software of the OS quality is made with such a low quality awareness. I wish I could get rid of the crappy OS made by programmer apprentice. It is not to understand: They control everything, from screws to components to drivers, but they are more and more not able to deliver stable releases. Apple more and more turns from a cool company to an something annoying like Microsoft. I guess this is not the engineers fault, more than this is it a lack of quality awareness by the management.

Update 5: Okay, I am NOT pleased to report that I experienced my first "new" crash today, 11 days after I did an erase and Catalina reinstallation, previously described. I know that I have added just one new piece of software since that time: "Focusrite Control," version 3.5.0.1754. I expect this is not a common app on this thread so maybe this isn't very helpful but I thought I should update my record here anyway. I'll touch base with Apple and Focusrite to see if I can learn anything helpful. All for now. ~k

I'v decided to go back to Mojave. But Mojave is not able to read the TimeMachine Backup made with Catalina!!! What a mess! Fortunatlly I have all my sources in an external repository and therefor nothing is lost. But to reinstall all necessary programs and setting (Apache, MySql, PHP, Eclipse, WebStorm, PHPStrom, C-cross compiler etc. etc) keeps me locked in a nightmare.

@Apple: Compatibility of a backup is essential and I need to ask you if you are completely mad? I consider to turn for my development agendas to Linux and to use my Mac as a typewriter for mails and docs. But isn't crazy to buy a typewriter for that money? I was so happy for years with my Mac as my main-device. Now I'm suffering more and more on the ignorancy of Apple-managers they are more concerned about the Stock-Market than customer satisfaction. Catalina is the almost deepest point of low quality since years. And what are you planning to do, Apple? An excuse might be a starting point where you are warning NOT to update to Catalina. Shame on you!

Hei Thomas

I also went through the painful process of "retrofit" (correct expression?) my mac. Fortunately not on such a high level of complexity.

It seems to me that apple sort of glitched on a major detail. IF (VERY BIG IF) Catalina gets to work on your mac, it's quite nice.

The weird thing is that those crashes seem to occur without clear pattern (devices, configurations vary).

I could imagine that Catalina is such a big step / causes so much trouble because it may be a sort of preparation to switch away from Intel®?

Anyway, it doesn't help, and the company has left many of its users in the rain.

I have exactly the same issue here. After upgrading to Catalina, my MacbookPro (13 inch 2017 3.5GHz Dual-Core i7) keeps crashing and it seems to be getting worse. I spoke to Apple support when it happened in October and followed the recommended steps like resetting SMS, safe mode, etc. Not much help. I lose wifi connection frequently and keeps seeing the "frozen" rainbow disk right after I sign on to my computer after sleep mode. It has been 3 months and it has been very frustrating. My Macbook had very little issues prior to the update.

If anyone has a good solution - very much appreciate it. But looks like we all have to wait for the Apple engineers to release the update..?

Updated to catalina 10.15.3. Does not solve the issue. After updating, I put my MacBook Pro to sleep (I had two Microsoft software open - OneNote and PowerPoint). 4-5 hours later, I tried to wake it up, but the frozen rainbow came up when I was trying to sign in. It was not as frequent right in October, but now it seems to be freezing everytime I put my Macbook to sleep.

The problem is getting worse. When my MacBook Pro (mid 2014, Catalina 10.15.3 (19D76)) is asleep, it crashes - that's not new - but now two times in a row. First the 'usual' crash, then another crash during the boot after the first crash. Then, after the 'enter' of logging in, the computer freezes completely and I have to force a hard boot with the power button. The computer then reboots and I can log in but then the system is extremely slow. Again restarting another time and login I can finally get to work. Good heavens Apple, what a mess you make of it!

To add to this, I've been posting to this thread quite a bit.

Originally, I had this problem on my Late-2013 15" MBP. Tried all sorts of hacks, finally figured out a way to keep my computer from going to sleep.

Eventually upgraded to a 16" 2019 MBP. Problem didn't happen for the first few weeks, but now it's back.

No idea why -- all of the cables are new, the USB hub is new, and now the tricks that I tried on the older MBP no longer work. Stumped and frustrated.

Thank you @xocd!!!

I have MacBook Pro 13" 2017 and have kaspersky, too and my MacBook is still crashing after waking up - almost everyday. I noticed Kaspersky was crashing the same time and was wondering if that could have been the culprit behind my MacBook crash. I did all reset including SMC, VRAM and nothing worked.

The MacBook crash started immediately after update to Catalina from Mojave. My Catalina is also updated to 10.5.3 as I was hoping the update would solve the issue....

Both my MacBook Pro (2014) and my i9 iMac 2019 are doing this. Thing in common. Catalina. This needs sorting out. The thing I always liked about my Macs was the stability compared with my works windows machines. Now that is gone. Wish I had not bought the new i9 iMac, with Vega 48 and saved half my money and bought a Dell or Asus or Lenovo desktop (insert any windows desktop name here). Shame Apple for issuing Catalina.

I totally agree. This is ridiculous and it is APPLE's issue. But yet they're letting us sit here and suffer for paying exorbitantly for their cheap *** products that don't work right while they sit there and take home a paycheck. I'm using this MacBook Pro even if it does crash every time it sleeps, until it dies. Then I'll use my company's computer and I'll never purchase another mac again. Apple has really done themselves in with me. And they offer no solution.

Same here with my MacBook Air 13 inch, 2017 model, if it sleeps for too long, it would just lock up after waking up, and it would just freeze the whole login screen, back when I purchased this Macbook installed with Mojave, this problem never happened. I

think this is a bug that needs to be fixed asap because constantly force shutting down a Mac or even a PC might corrupt data on the SSD/HDD making it unusable, I hope Apple will address this problem as soon as possible because my Macbook Air is my daily driver and if the software/drive gets corrupted due to the Sleep Wake doing weird stuff, I am going to get really disappointed because I have very important files on my Macbook and after power cycling it constantly, it is already doing some weird stuff such as Finder not starting up when logging in.
