Hi GavinFoo,

Thanks for posting! I understand you might be having an issue with waking your MacBook Pro from sleep, and I'm glad to help.

To troubleshoot, I recommend starting with this resource: If your Mac doesn't sleep or wake when expected

"If your Mac doesn't wake when you expect

Your Mac might pause a few seconds before it wakes up. If it doesn't seem to wake at all, check for these possibilities:

  • Your screen brightness might be turned down.
  • If you're using an external display, your display might be turned off.
  • Your Mac might be in safe sleep. To wake from safe sleep, press the power button.
  • Check for a sleep indicator light, if applicable, and make sure that your Mac isn't turned off."

If this doesn't seem to apply to what's happening, try these troubleshooting steps below. Safe mode and the test user account in particular may be helpful in narrowing down the issue:

"If the previous steps don't work

These additional steps may help identify or resolve the issue:

  • Reset the SMC.
  • Reset NVRAM.
  • Disconnect external devices other than your Apple keyboard, mouse, and display. If that resolves the issue, gradually reconnect your devices, testing each time, until you find the device that is interfering with sleep. Then check the documentation that came with the device, or contact the device manufacturer.
  • Start up in Safe Mode to see if the issue is related to non-Apple startup items, login items, or kernel extensions.
  • Try to isolate the issue by using another user account."

Cheers!

This happens to me too on a brand new top of the line Macbook Pro 16". I just started noticing it since I started using an external monitor. It seems to do with having stuff plugged in. Catalina has really been a huge disappointment in terms of stability.

I've sent multiple reports to Apple. How are they not investigating and fixing this? Incredibly disappointed for a $5000 computer.

UPDATE

With recent OS updates, my crashes are less frequent. Originally, it was thought that my bus-powered USB drive on my 2017 iMac was the culprit for my Catalina/sleep-related kernel panics, so I replaced it with another drive. No change.

Then Apple Engineering said they were sure it was memory related, so I had OWC replace their new 16GB of RAM with another pair. So far, I've tested with only the original pair of Apple RAM (total 8GB), only with the OWC 16GB, and with both sets in both positions. And yet the kernel panics continue. As mentioned, the only good news is that they're less frequent. I went 11 days between crashes this time. Still unacceptable and a complete mystery, but an improvement. Unless I have some other undiagnosed hardware issue, I still think Catalina is the culprit.

For me the problem was a Time Machine drive that the mac couldn’t write on (It was throwing errors on being unable to write on the drive, when then computer was working). I got a new hard drive and since then that issue has stopped. However I am having a lot of other issues with time machine, (one night it stopped someone suddenly and I had to erase everything to start again). The computer also doesn’t recognizes an old time machine, unless I leave it in the USB port for an hour or so (I heard that is a common problem)

didn’t expect this from Apple.

My system is fixed.

I am using 10.15.5 and my MBP16 has become perfectly stable. I've been doing photo work again and no problems with it at all. I've had 3-4 weeks without an issue. If you review my May 22, 2020 post above you will see the steps I used to gain stability before the 10.15.5 update. When it was released, 10.15.5 installed without issue and has been solid since day one.

I had the same issue with my 2017 iMac... There are two situations I hear that causes this. One is with the video card, apparently there is a problem with the software if you use an external monitor (according to a tech rep)and the second culprit is with an energy saving option in the "system preference" menu. I don't use an external monitor, so we tried option number two. My OS isn't on the 'Latest version' and i refuse to update since there are so many problems with MacOS (being an audio engineer, updates can mean loss of plugins, software compatibility, etc...) and i refused to update... so the gentleman recommended I go into SYSTEM PREFERENCES, ENERGY SAVER (with the lightbulb icon), ENABLE POWER NAP should be checked blue. If the Enable power nap is checked blue, uncheck it, and see if it resolves your issues. I had this problem every day for a few months and got tired of waking up to a completely shut down computer. So far, everything is good on my end and I have my fingers crossed it stays this way. I hope this information can help, or at least point you in the right direction

another UPDATE

In case it's useful for anyone finding this thread.

I had updated to 10.15.4 and experienced endless crashing, updated to 10.15.5 and nothing changed.

I then backed everything up and and formatted my Macbook 16" and installed 10.15.3 and have had zero issues.

Note I didn't use time machine to restore or migration manager. I manually copied over my documents and photos etc and reinstalled everything from fresh downloads. Everything is working great.

I just bought a new 2tb SSD to clone my Macbook and figured, with this clone backup, I'll try updating to 10.15.6. I instantly had issues again. One crash, and upon leaving it for a while returned to open it up and have a red screen! Restarted it, similar issues.

I've restored it using the cloned 10.15.3 and no issues again.

I have no idea what it is. It's really disappointing, especially because I can't access my Photos library for the time being because it's from a newer version of Photos.
