Two Volumes Named "Macintosh HD - Data" Now Appear in Disk Utility in Addition to "Macintosh HD".

I can't say for sure, but I doubt your fan running has anything to do with this new hard drive structure.

What do you mean by "the same thing" - you are supposed to have two hard drives:

I removed the last instance of HD Data in Disk Utility (right-click and choose Delete volume), and now things look as they should. And don't worry: you won't be able to delete a drive you're not supposed to delete.

Not sure you have to do all that. I had the same exact problem. Two data drives. One had material on it and the other was empty. I took it to the Apple store and "genius" looked at it and just deleted the drive with nothing in it. Everything is fine now. Time Machine works, the 2nd data drive has never returned and it all works well.

I had the same issue after a clean install of Catalina. I restarted in recovery mode and removed one data partition (the one that hasn't the home icon on it). I restarted and everything was OK. Hope it helps.

Thank you! I had the very same issue. Deleted the second Data-drive and voila!.... Time Machine is working again.

Each time you put a copy of Catalina on it installs another HD Data and may double your other data creating multiple Volumes with the container.

you must erase each HD Data drive in recovery (world spins) then erase the top layer (your physical drive). Then download Catalina in recovery NOT your copy. That is what is creating the multi volumes. Then set up your Mac from your time machine backup

This looks to be different. The doubled drives that I initially had, and then resolved were named "Macintosh HD Data". Its weird that you have 2 Macintosh HD drives. Catalina should have 1 Macintosh HD drive and 1 Macintosh HD Data drive. Do you not have a drive that was marked Data?

Same exact thing as @haudt89 I have been trouble shooting the fan constantly running and that's how I came across this. I'm not sure it's related either but that's how I found that I had two drives showing.

I read somewhere else that every time you reinstall Catalina it adds another Macintosh HD Data.

Were you able to actually delete it or just unmount it? How did you go about deleting it? I unmounted it and Time Machine started working, but I’d prefer to delete it entirely. I also got a message about how I was backing up from an encrypted disc to an unencrypted. I thought this was odd since I didn’t turn on the encryption option when I first set up my computer.

Ok, I did CMD - R and went to disk utilities. Then I went to the second MAC HD-DATA and clicked on it and deleted it. Then I restarted, and now there was only one hard drive, and all looked fine so far. In any case always have a working Back up available in case things are not fine.

I think the "Macintosh HD - Dữ liệu" was marked Data ("Dữ liệu" means data in English).

I'm going thru the same thing. Running into fan and hard drive issues where the thing is about to blow up. But all my data seems to be on the drive with Data not the regular HD. So what do I do?
