3rd party browser issues under catalina?

I'm running Catalina and most things are fine except for this:

every so often - usually after being active for most of the day - my other browsers (not safari) will be unable to access websites. they respond as if my internet connection has dropped, but it clearly hasn't. safari can still get out the door to everything. and my phone & other devices are fine. i'm talking specifically firefox & chrome. a restart of my machine typically fixes the issue.

once, the issue was 'fixed' in firefox by changing the url for the website - i copied what safari was using (no idea why they would have been different.

has anyone else seen anything like this?I did the upgrade about a week ago & I've seen this occurrence twice in the last couple of days.

thanks for any info

Forgot to address this in the last post.

Yes, I THINK I fixed this - and this one WAS Sophos related.

Sophos apparently needed FULL DISK ACCESS. The pop-up was trying to tell me that & show me how to do it - but I wasn't listening right. When I finally gave Sophos the access that particular browser issue went away - but then other stuff started falling out. So there wasn;t really a good, long bit of time to be Sure that the website problem was fixed - but it looked fixed.

currently running firefox v69.0.3.

restarting firefox definitely did not work for me.

However, i am running Sophos anti-virus. and there appears to be a Sophos step that i neglected to take after the catalina upgrade. this might be the problem. i've taken the needed action & i'll monitor the results & post back if it looks good.

thanks for your reply

I can't say what Chrome does but I do use Firefox most of time, currently v68.0.2. It will on rare occasions freeze for no apparent reason. Usually with a half dozen tabs open. Sometimes depending on which tabs. Personally I think it's a Firefox issue since it would do the same thing on Mojave.

Quitting then restarting Firefox works for me. Never had to restart a Mac.

I wholeheartedly second dialabrain's recommendation regarding Sophos and anti-virus apps in general. The tend to do more hard to a system's performance than good.'

This also goes for any "cleaning", "optimizing" or "speedup" apps. If you want to protect your Mac then read and following the recommendations in this user tip: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community

Many thanks for the reply (from Old Toad also).

Sophos may be a performance drag - I don't want to get into that discussion. But in this case, it was definitely NOT Sophos causing my problems.

The issues would also happen in safe mode.

Worse, I started noticing other things. I won't list all of them, but one thing was that within Most Apple apps (e.g. Safari) if I selected the little apple to ask Finder to show me Recent items, then selected a document to view, instead of the appropriate app opening up the document, a 'permissions error' would be throw - saying e.g. Safari didn't have permission to view the doc.

This did not happen in any non-Apple app that I could find. In happened in MOST Apple apps - but not all!

E.g. from within Music app I could get a pdf opened with Preview just as I expected to.

I thought (along with apple support) that my Catalina install must be screwed - so we reinstalled Catalina. All the problems were still there - even in safe mode. Apple senior support was very nice but mainly as clueless as I was.

I went back to Mojave.

I'll maybe try Catalina again after it's been updated a few times.

Clearly that line they sometimes put on products is true: Your results may vary.

Totally agree except with me, I can relaunch after restart. Don't hold your breath about Safari. I had to use it, but it is also showing signs of the problems with Chrome and Firefox hangups. As I mentioned in another response, Apple "genius" bar tried to fix the Firefox issue, but said if the problem reoccurs then to contact Firefox not them!!!!!!!

I'm trying to get my Apple backed up on an external drive (Apple won't do this), then go to the "genius" bar to get Mohave reinstalled and Catalina removed. I hope I don't screw up because I'm a simple user not a computer geek.

Important programmes like Office and Adobe will also cease to function unless you buy/subscribe to their new versions.

I'm writing this on Chrome, but don't expect it to remain stable for the day - another restart!

This is one reason to advise others to NOT install Catalina. Both Chrome & Firefox hang or crash for no apparent reason. Took mine to Apple "genius" bar. Got it back but problem reoccurred.

They are obviously not compatible even though both browsers are 64 bit. Offered solutions on sites like this are often beyond the abilities of simple users like me. Apple and the browsers do not have a patch or fix, so it is unclear which is responsible....each blame the other.

Catalina will also force you to buy or subscribe to apps that you may presently use, like Word and Office, Adobe (pre Catalina) will no longer function because they are 32 bit (whatever that is!). Stick to your present OS or don't upgrade beyond Mohave.

As yet, my only recourse is to restart the computer each time it hangs in Chrome and Firefox. I'm using Safari to post this reply.

Upgrade remorse.

How Apple could send an OS out the door with this problem is enraging. Lost productivity each day as I must reboot once Firefox and Chrome freeze and then can't be relaunched after doing a Force Quit. Annoying that Apple QA seemingly only cared to check that Safari would be stable in Catalina. Clearly didn't care about Firefox or Chrome. Nice to know the mother ship is trying to force our hand and use the inferior Safari browser. Catalina is a productivity disaster.
