Macbook Pro 13 2018 - CalDigit TS3 Plus Dock - Crash waking from sleep and restarts self

Note that Caldigit has released firmware 44.1 on Jan 6 2020. Release notes suggest that it addresses this issue. Good luck.

Same problem, I had this issue running two 4K displays with the TS3 and the system froze after sleeping. Then I ran the displays directly to two ports on my MacBook 16" and just used the TS3 for power and to connect hard drives, with that set up I had no problems at all. I just bought a StarTech Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort adapter and the issue came immediately back. I can confirm this is not just related to the Caldigit TS3.

Just wanted to update... I updated to Mac OS 10.15.3 and 44.1 on the TS3 and also use a Lacie 2big drive. I have a dual display setup... two LG 27UL850's. Previously I was using DisplayPort from TS3 to 27UL850 and then daisy chaining from TS3 to Lacie to DisplayPort then to 27UL850. After MANY issues with crashes and reboots I decided to try TS3 thunderbolt to 27UL850 and DisplayPort to 27UL850 and just using the 2big as a hard drive directly connected to my computer. So far this setup has worked for the most part being able to close the lid on my laptop without any crashes during sleep. Will continue to monitor but hopefully this has solved my problems!

I believe this is to do with Catalina & external displays via thunderbolt.

I had random kernel panic issues with my late 2017 macbook pro 15" and a LG34UM95 thunderbolt 2 display - so took it to the repair centre. Was told logic board probably gone, so got it sent off - and brought a new 16" in the meantime.

16" crashed just the same (didn't use migration assistant). Monitor works fine with a thunderbolt 2 enabled PC.

Brought a Caldigit usb-c (thunderbolt 3) dock to sit inbetween....still got issues...

Sorry to hear that. This was one of the most frustrating issues I have ever had with a Mac. I even tried running the two monitors through a thunderbolt to dual DisplayPort adapter and had the same wake issue so I really think it's a Catalina issue that Caldigit somehow addressed. I wish they would have provided more details about the firmware update. I have the same set up as you do. I'm running two LG 32UL750 monitors. One through the DisplayPort output and the second through the usb-c output using a usb-c to DisplayPort wire. Which graphic card do you have in your MacBook? I have the Radeon 5500M. I'm on Catalina 10.15.2.

At first the new CalDigit firmware (44.1) seemed to work, but I'm still having problems with my 16" MacBook Pro (2.3 GHz 8-core i9 with 32GB DDR4 RAM) plugged into the CalDigit TS3 Plus (with a Thunderbolt 3 cable) and the Caldigit plugged into a LG 34BK95U-W widescreen 5K monitor (with the USB-C or possibly thunderbolt cable that came with the monitor). I have the monitor set to use DisplayPort version 1.4 (but I've tried DisplayPort v1.2 and v1.1 settings before and they haven't helped). The MacBook Pro has the AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB VRAM, and Catalina was a clean install (I didn't use Migration Assistant) and updated to 10.15.3. Often after I let the MBP go to sleep and come back hours later, the MBP has crashed and shut itself down. Then I have to do some combination of power cycling devices, SMC resets, and zapping PRAM to get it to work with the TS3 and monitor again. Seems to work ok if I don't let the setup sit for very long, but after leaving it for hours it's likely to be dead. Very annoying problem, as having the CalDigit in the loop is supposed to make things more convenient but it is actually wasting a lot of my time.

I should have posted sooner, this firmware update completely resolved the wake issue for me.

Was excited for the firmware release but I'm sad to report that I still have the same issue even with the update... MacBook Pro 16" connected to dual LG monitors via DisplayPort...

For now I'm just going to keep the lid open and mirror 1 screen to my laptop...

I have the AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB too... and same... I'm on 10.15.2.

Come to think of it I'm actually daisy chaining with my Lacie 2big to run 1 of my monitors... I'm gonna try removing that from the equation to see if it helps...

Similar issue here, but not with sleep mode, I have my newly purchased iMac 2019 27" and Macbook Pro 16", all have the issue that I simply cannot boot up the compute when connected with the Caldigt TS3 Plus dock, tried several times but just cannot boot any of my mac up with this connected! and the screen just freezes on the Apple logo, and when unplug the box and next seconds it boots up successfully without any issue... so definitely the issue is with the box, probably gonna return it...

So I've tried a few different settings in power management/etc but I'd have to say that for me the firmware upgrade to 44.1 is WORSE than before. Now my computer crashes every time it goes to sleep whether the lid of my laptop is open or closed.

Can anyone who's problem went away share the details of their setup?

this is a known issue.. check out this thread.. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250716345?answerId=251417425022 they found out the issue is at least sometimes, caused by the J5 create drivers.. I have a TS3 Plus after having the J5 and I'm having the same issue. I'm going to try deleting the J5 driver to see if that helps..

The Caldigit dock only has a blue light when receiving a signal through the thunderbolt port to the computer. So since you had it unplugged from the computer the light being off is normal behavior.

After a couple of months of back and forth with Caldigit for a similar issue, they told me that my computer "is most likely having an issue with either the logic board or the Thunderbolt controller" and to contact Apple. I did, they told me I should bring it for a technician to check it, but I don't trust the authorized technical support here in Argentina based on past experiences so I'm looking for refund options.

I just took in my MacBook Pro 16" for the same reason -- using CalDigit Power Dock -- and there's nothing wrong with the Mac. It's something to do with the power dock. But the extension for the J5 are different. So I'm not sure what to remove in this instance, since none of the three extensions they recommend dumping are showing up in my extensions library.
