Reminders app waking mac from sleep

I've been having 2 issues with my mac staying asleep, this post is about one of them, which is regarding reminders waking from sleep, turning the display on, and not going back to sleep:

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017). Mac OS 10.15. Have two external USB hard drives hooked up at all times.

In Energy Saver, power nap is off, wake for network access is off. In Notifications, Do Not Disturb has the following 3 checked: "When the display is sleeping, when the screen is locked, when mirroring to TVs".

I set up a test reminder, see the `inDelta=137` below.

Abridged log using `pmset -g log` (full log in attached file):

For what it's worth, I had this same issue since I updated to Catalina in January. After trying almost everything on the forums, I had turned off all reminders and notifications but my computer still turned on twice a day and the exact same time. In my terminal, I followed someone else's advice and typed in this command:

pmset -g log | egrep '\b(Sleep|Wake|Start)\s{2,}

to see that it was in fact waking at those times

and then

pmset -g sched

to see that I did in fact have it scheduled to wake.

Something someone else wrote gave me the impression to check my iCloud account, which I rarely use. I logged in and lo and behold, I had 2 reminders that were in my iCloud that weren't on my phone reminders anymore. I deleted those 2 items and this morning was the first in months that my computer did not wake!

So, in addition to the list that Apple provides, I recommend checking your iCloud reminders or notifications because that is what was causing the problem for me.

So I had this same issue. I had caffeine installed. Apparently it kept the system awake after the reminder wake was triggered. I installed Amphetamine and checked "Allow system sleep when display closed" option. Since then when the reminder woke my mac when it was asleep, it would go back to sleeping a minute later. Hope this helps for you guys too

Hello FUNK1196,

Thanks for posting about the issue you're experiencing on your Mac. I understand that it appears to be waking from sleep unexpectedly.

I recommend checking out some of the suggestions from this link to make sure you've covered them all: If your Mac doesn't sleep or wake when expected

"If your Mac wakes unexpectedly

Your Mac might wake for these activities:

  • Network activity that uses the Wake on Demand feature. Examples of network activity include iTunes sharing, photo sharing, printer sharing, file sharing, and using Back to My Mac.*
  • Enhanced notifications from FaceTime, Messages, and other apps and services.
  • Bluetooth activity. To prevent Bluetooth devices from waking your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth. Click the Advanced Button, then deselect "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer."

This may help as well:

"If the previous steps don't work

These additional steps may help identify or resolve the issue:

  • Reset the SMC.
  • Reset NVRAM.
  • Disconnect external devices other than your Apple keyboard, mouse, and display. If that resolves the issue, gradually reconnect your devices, testing each time, until you find the device that is interfering with sleep. Then check the documentation that came with the device, or contact the device manufacturer.
  • Start up in Safe Mode to see if the issue is related to non-Apple startup items, login items, or kernel extensions.
  • Try to isolate the issue by using another user account."

If none of the above seems to help in getting to the bottom of the issue, I recommend that you Contact Apple Support next.

Best wishes.

I have the same issue. I have tried as well a lot of things including clean install of Catalina. It is a bug with the reminder app. You can switch all of in Notification Center. It doesn't help. As well, do not disturb, or any of the other settings don't work. Including 00.00-23.59 DnD!

I think the best thing is, switch of iCloud sync of reminder app and clean all reminders within the app on your Mac. So it means you can only use your other staff like iPhone or iPad for the reminders.

Why the Mac don't go to sleep? This is a bug as well. The Prozess apfsd / hidd let the Mac not go to sleep.

Well. When I set a reminder I expect it the reminder otherwise what is the goal to have a reminder.

May be the bug was on previous release that won’t remind you something because the Mac was asleep.

I mean you expect an alarm clock to wake up you, don’t you ?

now I would likely agree that it depends of each one requirement, I think it make sense to have a reminder be ‘vocal’ thus attempt to remind me something in all situation, you don’t think so.

Both are acceptable. As a developer you need to choose one or t other.

BTW have you or not set a reminder at this time ?

I think it's a hideous idea that a Mac would wake up for reminders. It destroys the whole concept of being asleep. When a Mac is put to sleep it should NEVER wake up (unless you set it to 'wake for network access'). That's what sleep means. If you want to sit there by your Mac and have it remind you, don't have it asleep. Just use a screensaver or turn the monitor off. Sleep should mean sleep. What is the point of waking up for every reminder when you're not there. As I said, if there are occasions when you want it to remind you, DON'T PUT IT TO SLEEP. In any case an iOS device or Watch will always remind you.

Besides, as has been pointed out, the Mac has NEVER previously done this which with all the bugs Apple seem to be incapable of eliminating prior to MacOS releases does rather indicate this is just another Catalina bug.

If you consider this normal and correct behaviour, what are doing here.

"Me too"!

Macbook Pro Early 2015 with Mac OSX 10.15.4 installed, connected with Ethernet, power and external screen.

Every morning I see light coming from my office room as Macbook is already awake due to reminders.

I tried everything that has been suggested in this thread, nothing helped.

When I put my Macbook to sleep, I want it to sleep, not to wake up in the middle of the night.

From my point of view, this is a bug and should be fixed.

If this has been added by Apple intentionally, they should at least give user a checkbox within the settings to decide, which wake up behaviour they prefer!
