Where has the option to display only unread messages gone from Mac Mail in classic layout?

Only recently upgraded (?) to Mojave and trying to use Mail the way I have been doing. This involves selecting a bunch of emails by a search in Classic layout and then filtering the list to show just those I haven't read yet. I see that in non-Classic view this is now done by a button like on my phone, but in classic view I can't find how to do it without changing away from Classic layout.

Yes, I know I can set up a smart mailbox and I have done that. But this is a poor second best because I can no longer toggle between including and excluding read messages in the display with the same search criterion.

Is this just an unfriendly or careless design change by the team?

Thanks, but I'm using "classic layout" and I don't see that button - that was my point.

And I have no difficulty selecting my "smart" mailbox that shows unread items. The issue is that if I switch between that mailbox and my inbox then Mail clears its search. So that makes it a poor replacement for the filter toggle, which des work in non-classic layout.

hmm.. One more upgrade and you loose "Classic View" altogether in macOS Catalina—however from the drop down menu Mail>View>Use Column layout you still can get the read/unread filter icon

What happens if you control click in your menu bar—does it reveal an option to customize:

Well I can't afford to move to Catalina for quite a while yet (yes, it will involve spending real money replacing software and hardware it won't tolerate).

Thanks for the interesting information about what for me is a future system, but that doesn't go anywhere near answering my question. Or are you saying that the facility I've lost really is gone as part of the long term decline in the UI quality of the MacOS Mail app. I see from your other discussion that at least see people are unimpressed by the Use Column Layout in Catalina. Maybe the best suggestions really is to look for a better third party Mail app.
