"The Music Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-54)"

Upgraded to Catalina on my late 2015 iMac. First time I opened the new Music, my extensive library of albums appears to be there, but a window with the above error message repeatedly pops up. My music library is on this iMac, but all the music appears in the music app, but all appear as Apple Music Match titles that need to be downloaded. None of it will play.

Anyone else having this issue and how do I resolve it?

P.S.: The music remains available and playable on my iPhone and iPad.

The issue for me was that the permissions on the Music directory where my Music library is stored (.itl and .xml files) for some reason had changed to Read only after the Catalina install. I selected the Music directory > Get Info (⌘ + i) and changed permissions for my user account to read & write.

Not sure if others had this problem, but Music had decided to close my previous library, so I had to hold option and launch Music which gives you the ability to choose which library to load (browse for .itl file). Everything seems to be working now.

i just wanted to update: i was able to fix the issue. there are generally two ways: with music running, click on music, click on preferences, click on flies and see if it says what folder music is feeding and saving to. if not, change it.

you can also import a library and see if that brings your music back.

i've been able to do that but i still receive that same error message. so far, the techs haven't been very helpful. it's irritating and profoundly frustrating.
