Songs do not play

When I start up iTunes, I receive the following message: iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly. The song I select shows up at the top, but the song never starts. Other apps work and the sound is fine on with everything else. As suggested by others, I selected edit, preferences, playback and switched from Direct Sound to Windows Audio Session. I restarted iTunes as directed. It does not work with either. I am at a loss. Please help.
