I received a message for the first time that I am 33% infected and go download something to fix it. This is the first time and in the past I did this on a PC and it turned out the download was the virus. How does my apple care notify me, how would I know if this is legit.
It is a phishing scam.
No Anti-Virus software or so-called “cleaning” apps are needed or recommended for Mac OS. They can conflict with Mac's own built-in security. At best they will slow your Mac by using unnecessary resources and at worst will bork your entire system. Your Mac has all the built-in protection you need.

No one can determine whether your computer is infected from outside your computer. These message and emails are ALWAYS a SCAM.
They are trying to get you to click on something, and then will try to take over your computer and steal your credit cards and/or identity. They are sent to you by Criminals, who would tell you anything to get your money or control of your computer. They are blatant and obvious LIES.
IF my laptop is infected how am I notified? I know that virus' can pose as safety messages
