Catalina: many apps returning a Disk Full error, but I have lots of free space on Macintosh Data

As soon as I upgraded to Catalina I started running into some weird Disk full errors.

  • Chrome can't manage to save downloads into /Downloads and return a `Failed - Disk full` error.
  • Mail app shows a message saying there's not enough free space to download the mail and prompts to qui
  • Google Drive can't sync properly because there's no space
  • `npm install` inside /Sites/xyz fails because of disk space issues.

I have already tried to:

  • Restart my iMac in recovery mode with CMD+R
  • Deleted all partitions on the internal hard drive
  • Create one new 1TB partition
  • Installed fresh Catalina
  • After I start reinstall some software, the disk full error happens again

As you can see in the screenshot, I have 900+ GB of free space. It seems somehow like the OS is trying to save data in the partition the Mac reserves for the System, and somehow that partition doesn't have much space and runs out of data.

To point out my internal hard drive was replaced two years ago with a Samsung PM863a MZ7LM960HMJP SSD drive. Not sure if this could be causing some misconfiguration issues.

I think it's fixed. I have installed the latest update for Catalina available two days ago which mentions "- Improves installation reliability of ‌macOS Catalina‌ on Macs with low disk space", and now I haven't run anymore in the disk space issue so far!
