Can't open .CR2 (raw files) on Preview anymore after upgrade to Catalina
Does anyone know how to fix this? Also, when I delete a .CR2 file it tells me that "trash isn't usable with this type of file" makes me click "permanently delete".

FWIW, .cr2 is a generic extension for all Canon cameras. which camera are you using? Not all Canon cameras are supported.
I"m using a Mark IV,.... I've been using it for a year on this Mac. Updated to Catalina last night and it will no longer open files using the Preview app. I had to download a third party application to open them for culling. I used to open them in preview, cull my photos and then load them to Lightroom.
Well, I don't know which "Marl IV" but it doesn't really matter if you could open the previously. I have cr2 files from five different Canon cameras and they all open in Preview so I don't know what the problem may be. Maybe someone else will.
Confused by your unhelpful statement. It’s a Canon EOs 5D Mark IV .. there’s only one, and it’s one of the most popular camera bodies in the world. And I’m not sure why you’re saying it doesn’t matter if I could open them previously. I opened them with preview last night. Upgraded to Catalina afterwards last night. Cannot open them now in the morning. I’ve made no other changes to my Mac besides upgrading. So it’s clearly an issue or setting with Catalina.
Sorry I confused things for you. Since there is more than one Canon "Mark IV" I didn't know which one you meant. I said it didn't matter which one it was since you could open them before. I also said I don't know what the problem might be. I thought I was clear. I guess not for everyone.
FWIW, this question is marked as Solved. However, that could be a mistake, I don't know. Personally I downloaded 1D Mark IV and 5D Mark IV RAW files. I have no problem opening either in Catalina or trashing them. If you could add more information it might help.
Thanks for your response. I have the Canon EOS 6D Mark II, and the photos are produced in the format .CR2 (Canon CR2 raw image). I was previously able to open those photos using the software "Preview", but since I updated to OS Catalina yesterday the photos are no longer viewable, and of course no thumbnail preview appears either.
When I attempt to open the files via Preview, I get the error message "The file “IMG_____.CR2” could not be opened. Preview currently does not support this raw file format." Two days ago it would've opened these files as easily as it would open a .jpg file.
The inconvenient workaround I've found is to open the photos in Canon's software "Digital Photo Professional" or the newer versions of Adobe Lightroom. It's a much slower process than before when I could've quickly browsed through my photos in a regular folder.
I'm hoping a future update restores Preview's compatibility with my camera's output of .CR2. Until then any tips are appreciated.
Well, I downloaded four 6D II RAW files. All open in Preview and all thumbnails are visible.
Try booting into Safe Mode then boot normally. Safe Mode takes a few to open.

I tried your suggestion, I opened the files both during safe mode and after I re-booted normally. In both instances the same error came up and the files did not open. I think I'm going to have to fiddle around with the camera's output settings and find another raw format that my macbook's new OS configurations accept. Thank you for all your help.
I'm in the exact same situation which immediately started after updating to Catalina. Unfortunately these discussion boards seem to never provide answers.
I'll download some sample files and see what happens in a few.
You're welcome.
