arduino upload problems

Im using osx 10.15 catalina. Having problems uploading to an Arduino.

The Arduino IDE reports" Error opening serial port '/dev/**.usbserial-AM01P3WE'. (Port busy)"

I have looked at the Arduino forums but there are no relevant solutions there.

Anyone else here using Catalina with Arduino?

Thanks Peter.

I have removed the previous version of Arduino.app from applications.

I then downloaded the Arduino hourly build from Arduino.cc , the version I got was dated 12 November 2019.

This now compiles and uploads sketches to my boards.

This fix was prompted by the thread linked from Github elsewhere in this topic.

Cheers Peter.

Peter,

AnotherBob67 found a solution.

  1. Trash Arduino 1.8.10 from the Applications folder.

2. Find and remove the Arduino15 folder in /home/Library.

3. Download a new Arduino app from www.Arduino.cc under the Download button.

4. I copied it into my Applications folder. Click on it. I got a message that it is malicious software. See image.

5. Click on Open in the System Preferences Security and Privacy.

Arduino opened as expected. Not sure, what lies ahead, but at least I got it installed.

Paul,

This is quite different to the problem I am seeing. I can start the Arduino IDE and edit programs, I can compile programs.
what I cannot do is download programs to the Arduino hardware.
I am using a genuine Arduino UNO and have the most recent version of the IDE loaded.
I have also used the most recent version of Catalina on the Mac.
If I compile and download a program using a windows PC and then connect the Arduino to my Mac I can get serial data from the Arduino to show up in a terminal session so I believe all the hardware is working fine.

The problem I am having is just the download to the Arduino.
I have been following a thread on github and it looks like this is related to the way the Arduino downloader works.
But so far I have not seen any solution for this issue.

Cheers

I spent a few hours troubleshooting my code before I just attempted a basic blink sketch only to find out that Catalina has disabled the Java plugin as well as Arduino IDE 1.8.9 from uploading to the boards. I downloaded the latest IDE 1.8.10 only to have Catalina disallow the installation all together. I am the most amateur of hobbyists and find it hard to believe there is no solution for this issue. Yes. I am trying to use Arduino with Mac Catalina. It does not work for me.

This is what I am finding: I can successfully download the Arduino app to my computer. It opens a splash screen, initialize the packages and start. Then, the Arduino quietly quits. The Arduino shows up on the Apple menu and then disappears without any messages.

I cannot find anyone who has solved this problem on https://arduino.stackexchange.com.
