I am working on creating a slideshow and am wanting background music; however, I have no music in iTunes. Is my only option to download a song or any helpful tips to make this smoother are greatly appreciated!

You can still purchase songs from iTunes. You just need to open iTunes and sign in. That would probably be your best option.

Another option is to create your slideshow in the Photos app where you can select theme songs that are part of the slideshow feature. After completing the slideshow you can export it as a movie.

A third option is to use the jingles and songs that are included in the iMovie app when you click on the Sound Effects tab in an iMovie project sidebar.

Also, as you mention, you can download a song from the web, such as from Amazon.
