Does automatic download apply to MacOS upgrades or just apps?

In MacOS 10.14, System Preferences/Software Update/Advanced, there is a checkbox to "Download new updates when available. although I have it checked, and the Software Update indicates Catalina is available, it has not been downloaded. Does the automatic download apply to app updates, not OS upgrades?

Additional updates Recently I ran EtreCheck app on my Mac and it showed that I have to install some additional updates (Security update and Safari update). Catalina update is also available but I don't want to install it since I've downgraded back to Mojave a while ago. So, is it possible to install additional updates without getting my macOS updated? No Software update found in app store? Hello, I'm running iMac 27" Late 2013 Sierra 10.12.6 I clicked on software update tab(in the "about this mac") and it takes me to the app store, but there is no updates for software. What am i missing here? I know I cant go higher than catalina 10.15 but do i have to type in catalina in the app store? i assumed it would automatically be seen in the updates area. Thanks

Yes, app updates not OS upgrades.
