Outlook app doesn't synchronize when in background

I have an iPhone 8+ with iOS 12.4 and the Outlook app. I think this used to work but doesn't anymore: when the app is in background (when phone screen is locked/off, or even when using the phone but other app is in foreground) it doesn't sync email. Not until I bring it to the foreground, when it automatically syncs right away. Apple's Mail program does sync on its own, in background. Any way to make Outlook sync every so often, even if it's not in foreground?

Hello Michael Levin!

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. I understand you have some questions about the Outlook app not syncing mail while it is not on-screen.

Currently, when an app is not in use it will enter a suspended state. If you have Background App Refresh turned on, then Outlook can check for new content while in the suspended state. Check out the information and steps to check the settings under, “Use Background App Refresh,” from this article: Switch apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you have Background App Refresh turned on for Outlook and it’s still not performing as you expect it to, reach out to Microsoft for more assistance: Outlook for iOS and Android Help.

Cheers
