final cut X ntsc project

How do I select NTSC settings for my project in Final Cut X? When I clicked on custom settings every setting seemed to be a variation on a progressive format.

I want the project to be 1920 by 1080 NTSC 29.97 frames per second.

Thank you.

NTSC is in fact an analogue video system.

It is unfortunately still called that in the digital world!

1920x1080 (Resolution) is a High Definition Digital format (HD-SDI) in which you can scan either interlaced or progressive. It is not NTSC video.

Standard Definition Digital formats (SD-SDI/DV) has various resolutions.

for frame rates at 23.98p 29.97i 29.97p the Resolutions available are 720x480, 720x480 Anamorphic, 720x486, 720x486 Anamorphic

for frame rates of 25 and 50 the Resolution available is 720x576.

What also differs with these formats is the pixel aspect ratios (they are NON Square)

Interlace scanning is on it's way out.

To create a project for 1920x1080 interlaced click on use custom settings

Then click and select 1080i HD and select your frame rate after that.

You may be incorrect in stating that NTSC is standard definition only. My understanding is that NTSC is the interlaced format used by television broadcasting in the United States that includes what I would consider high definition, a resolution of 1920X1080 interlaced. So far as I know, the frame rate for broadcast television in the US remains 29.97 frames per second. My understanding has been that 1920X1080 interlaced or NTSC is considered High Definition.

However, rather than get sidetracked by a discussion of standard definition and high definition, I still need help with my original question. I did not see the option for interlaced or progressive frame rates in the settings window for Final Cut X. I only saw options for progressive frame rates. Any light you could shed on why I may not be locating the interlaced option would be much appreciated.

You comment about NTSC did send me searching the internet to see if my usual mode of preparing films for broadcast was somehow off the money. Over the past several years I've had films broadcast on PBS stations that required a 1920X1080 interlaced format at 29.97 frames per second. Perhaps the confusion between us is how one might definite, High Definition. If that's my confusion, please accept my apology.

Here's the link to an article on the issue of a 1920X1080i resolution that seemed to clarify things for me. You may have more experience with these terms than I do.
