Transferring music from iTunes to iPhone

So based off of bad advice, I tried to get a playlist back (that I deleted accidentally) by moving the "iTunes Library.itl" in my Home Music folder onto the desktop and importing it back into iTunes and then deleting it off my desktop. This caused me to loose all the songs that weren't bought on iTunes. I went back into my Home Music Folder and dragged all my iTunes Media music, that I have backed up there, back into iTunes to fix my library. The only problem is that now I can't drag and drop any music or playlists onto my iPhone when it is plugged into iTunes. Nothing will transfer. Please help.

If you cannot use the drag & drop method can you Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod using your computer - Apple Support and sync with selected playlists? I've always been of the opinion that this is a better method of controlling the content you put on the device since with you can review what is and isn't selected from your collection without connecting it. E.g. put the playlists that will go on the device in a folder and make a smart playlist that shows what is in Music but not in that folder.

Thank you for responding. I’m sorry I didn’t provide more detail. First, there is no error message when I try to drag and drop. It just won’t select or highlight my

iPhone as an option. I tried it with both my music and music I bought off of iTunes and neither one will select my phone to transfer. Although I can download the bought ones directly on my phone I can’t drag and drop them. I had no problems doing this before the library reboot. Secondly, I can’t restore from time machine as I don’t use it for backup as it has never worked properly for me. Due to this, I use external hard drives and automatically back up anytime I add music to the music file on my Mac (an option I selected in iTunes). It was from these files that I restored my library. They are the original music files so I am confused as to why this would make a difference, but apparently it does. I would be hesitant to restore it to a previous library anyway as it took me awhile to get the library back up to what I had as I lost thousands of songs. Any help would be appreciated greatly. Thank you!
