I use this on my watch nearly every day but i have to also use a third party running app to get credit for the exercise and calories burned because I’m walking a dog. Lots of pauses, starts and stops. How about a dog walkers app so we don’t have to use a third party, gps using, battery gulping app?

The walk or running activities are exercises. You need to get your heart rate up in order for it to count as exercise.
It is based on height, weight, sex, distance, heart rate etc.
If you just want to stroll with your pet and have it count as "exercise time" use "Other workout" it will count the time as exercise.
