Severe battery drain, iOS 13.1.3, iPad Pro

Any suggestions?

I am experiencing severe battery drain, iOS 13.1.3, iPad Pro. In Settings>Battery, Safari is shown to be the biggest drain by far (BY FAR!). Have been going from 100% after unplugging charger to less than 50% in two hours of morning use (between 7:00 and 9:00am). At the rate of drain, will have zero left before noon. I use Safari to read articles/morning news...not watching battery consuming videos (but even if I were, this performance would be atrocious and unacceptable). Have performed all the “fixes” I found listed online thus far: install the latest iOS with its “battery fix,” wait (did so for days!) for app updates to “catch up,” lower screen brightness, turn off background app refresh, close apps (and rebooted), minimize open tabs in Safari (usually only have two open at any one time, but also erased history/data and rebooted), etc. Nothing helps. There is a serious problem and it doesn’t appear to be a setting. Thank you for any suggestions.

Perhaps I am incorrect, however, before updating to to IPadOS 13, I never experienced battery drain when I closed the cover. I could leave it for days and not experience power loss. Now I lose 50% overnight when there is no activity.

I am convinced something has changed, and judging by the large number of other people complaining about the same thing, I think I am correct.

Ratul144: No change. I installed 13.3.1 several days ago. Problem persists. My problem started with installation of 13 and despite incremental “improvement” releases has not improved. Can’t get through even a single morning without having to recharge. Everything that can be turned off while still enabling me to work is off, or dimmed, or whatever else has been recommended. This problem and its persistence is making it virtually impossible to do my work.

So, I posted a while ago how my iPad mini 4 had all the same problems that everyone is discussing. This after having put in a new battery in September prior to iOS 13. I was getting about 2 days worth of battery before the update and 1/2 a day after. Seeing that my battery was under warranty (and desperate to find something that worked) I had the new battery replaced.

The new post iOS 13 battery again gives me 2 days of battery life! No clue why/how an update can kill a new battery, but replacing the battery has worked. It has been about 1 month since I replaced the battery and I am still enjoying a nice battery life.

Just saying.

have any of you measured the battery drain with iMazing?

I did, and it’s a constant 655mA when the iPad is locked and the screen is off.

I did DFU restore, set my iPad Pro 2p18 as a new one and still the drain is the same.

No amount of Hard Resets did any good for me.

I’m particularly interested to know how much your batteries drain in sleep mode.

procedure:

install iMazing on a Mac. Connect it to the iPad through a cable. Then connect them both to the same WiFi network, unplug the cable. Lock your iPad and click on the battery icon of your respective iDevice on iMazing. You should be able to see instantaneous current drain.

My iPad remains warm at the centre all the time. Dunno if the software updates caused a hardware problem but the battery drain is consistent.

I’ve gone through all the threads I could find regarding this matter and found that for some, a fresh restart without backup seems to have worked. Not for me.

Been having similar issues, but I’m not sure if my battery drainage is that severe

I was using my iPad Pro to play study music (Lofi) on YouTube, For one and a half hours my battery went from 100% to 54%. After updating to iOS 13, I find myself looking for the iPad charger more frequently. There is definitely something wrong with this update!

I’ve been hoping Apple will address this problem; no luck. I’ve lost count on how many hours I’ve spent with support trying to get this resolved. Now, with the latest bug fix, my iPhone 8 is draining fast. I wouldn’t recommend an Apple iPhone or an iPad at this point. Who do you have to call or communicate with to get this fixed? I shut my iPad down at night. I run my phone in low power mode and it still drains

I’ve said it before in this forum and say it again, replacing the battery does work. It shouldn’t be necessary and there it isn’t logical that an IOS update would cause a battery to die and replacing it should work, but it does. I replaced my battery pre IOS 13.0 and was getting 2 days on my battery. After ios13, it died in 4 hours. Nothing worked. My battery was still under warranty so I took it back and got a new battery. I am back to 2 days again. Consistently. Been 2months and all is still great.

thanks for the info.

suppose, the software update actually messed with the hardware and damaged the battery or part of the power handling circuit. Apple knows that and doesn’t acknowledge it. If people go to an Apple store with the device, they say that they have only replaced the battery. But in reality, they not only swap the battery but also fix the damaged circuitry. Thus, the device performs as before. Now imagine, I live far away from any Apple store. I’ve heard that replacing the battery works! Now I go to a third party repair shop and replace my battery. Boom! I return with a device faulty as ever along with an empty pocket!

might seem far fetched but reality is stranger than fiction 😅

anyway, thanks for sharing your experience, might be helpful for many.

I don’t know about any faulty circuits—i only had the battery replaced. The place I went to was GopherMods near my house (not the apple store). They had replaced the old battery on my Mini in September (the mini was now 2 years old and the battery was performing poorly). all was well until December/January when 13.0 hit. Immediately I had problems. Based in this discussion group I knew full well it was the update fault, but decided to take advantage of the battery warranty and try again just in case that fixed the problem (tried everything else and was so frustrated). It worked!

I should mention that when I picked up my iPad from the battery replacement place the tech did say that if my battery didn’t seem to be working there may be a hardware problem—hinting strongly that the good battery should NOT have had issues so soon (of course). Clearly we are all aware that this last update created a few problems and a lot of angry customers.

Anyway, that’s my story at least.

I had this same issue. I purchased a refurbished iPad Pro 10.5 on Black Friday. It’s been working great until about 2 weeks ago. I left it on my overnight stand with around 80% charge. I woke up in the morning and it was dead. Ever since the. I could watch the battery drain while doing nothing but using Safari. It would easily lose 10% or more an hour. It got to where it wouldn’t last more than 4 or 5 hours with minimal use.

I tried all the suggestions about turning this that and the other off until all the features I bought an iPad for were disabled with no help. The battery kept draining. I installed iMazing and it showed my battery health at 95% so this shouldn’t be an issue. I understand it if the battery was old or bad, I have the same issue with an iPhone 6.

I attempted to do a DFU restore but I got an error on that so I finally said the heck with it and did a reset and erased all the settings, basically starting with it as it came when I bought the thing. I ran it for a day with just the default apps and with location and notifications turned off. I left it on the table with 80% charge and ran some errands for the day. When I came back 8 hours later it was still at 80%.

I installed a few more apps that I had installed soon after getting the iPad and so far so good. It’s still hold a charge and lasting like it did when I first got it. I plan to slowly add more apps back and see how that goes. I don’t know if it was a rogue app, a wonky install of an app, a setting I had set that I didn’t know about, or what. I don’t know if this is the solution for everyone but I just knew for me the loss of a little data and the hassle of setting this back up was worth it if it resolved my issue. Hopefully this helps someone else.

This is a very good idea that everyone who posted here with this issue should try.

I hesistated to offer this option all of this time as this is a very slow and tedious procedure/way to go if an iPad has a lot of apps on it.

As you need to install one third party app at a time and then use your iPad for a while before installing another app.

This is the only way to tell if the battery issue is really caused by an app or series of apps,,or not, OR iPadOS, itself.

Everyone here should backup the data on their iPads, Erase all settings and contents of your iPads and set them up as new iPads run them, for a time, with just the normal Apple default installed apps, then add apps back one at a time until everyone runs into a problem with any app/s that maybe causing the battery drain, as I feel that this is not a widespread iPadOS issue, but maybe a problematic app/s issue.

Best of Luck to All!
