I have been having problems with my superdrive since the Catalina installation. I went through troubleshooting with Apple Support and at the Genius Bar. My drive worked in the store but not on my imac. Anyone with a late 2012 mac and Catalina OS having trouble with their superdrive? Mine will not recognize the region of DVDs, freezes the Music app when trying to play the CD and freezes up when burning a CD.
Running macOS Catalina 15.10.2
SuperDrive icon not on the desktop.
Restarted with a CD in the drive earlier. Drive then sucked it in but I couldn't eject it.(Eject icon came up but nothing happened until, I don't know what, the drive ejected the CD. ?????
Besides, Finder Preferences window shows CDs and DVDs box checked but desktop shows no drive icon.

I have the same problem, I just bought the MacBook Pro 16plg and md makes a mistake "this device requires power, connect to the electricity network", I tested it on two machines of an Apple physical store in Mexico and I made the same mistake, they tested it on a computer 2018 or less, with Mojave or earlier and I work the superdrive without problem. You have to generate an update of Catalina so that it functions correctly (Apple, urgent)
Can you explain the statement in bold? Does that mean the Superdrive won't work on your MBP without it being connected to the power cube?
It sounds like that particular SuperDrive is damaged and drawing too much power. If you can, see if you can test another SuperDrive in your USB ports.
If it's been less than 14 days or less since you purchased the drive you can return it to Apple for a complete refund no questions asked.
This seems to definitely be an issue with Catalina. My SuperDrive worked just fine before the upgrade and immediately stopped working after the upgrade. Now, the SuperDrive powers up and the CD/DVD spins up but never mounts. I just tired it on my wife's laptop that's still running Mohave and everything works perfectly.
In reference to my post above, for what it's worth, I'm using a 2018 Mac Mini with 16GB of memory. I tried all the fixes mentioned previously in this thread. Nothing works. Again, though, the same CD/DVDs mount just fine on my wife's MacBook Pro running Mohave and using the same SuperDrive.
My SuperDrive works just fine on a 2013 iMac 27" running Catalina 10.15.3, so obviously Catalina does support these devices.
I have no problems at all with CDs or DVDs, Music (iTunes) or TV. The DVD Player app has no issues with the drive whatsoever.
Even Handbrake seems to do okay with it as well.
I can't say what's going on with all these other machines, but there's light at the end of this tunnel, folks.
Let me tell you an actualization. I went to an apple store and try with a USBC - USB adapter and "vualá", the Superdrive works perfect in a MBP 16" Catalina. The conclusion is the SDworks properly only between apple products. "tache", don't be jealous and free the functionality of products with other brands.
Let me tell you about another actualization. My took my iMac (27", Late 2015) running the latest version of Catalina (10.15.3) and plugged my older SuperDrive (Model A1379) into a USB port on my iMac. I could not insert a DVD nor does Disk Utility see the SuperDrive. My conclusion is the SuperDrive works properly only between a LIMITED number of Apple products.
The System Report shows an Apple USB SuperDrive but it has a Serial Number which does not match the one on the box that the SuperDrive came in. I tried attaching the SuperDrive to my old 17" MBP running High Sierra and it gave an error message that it is not supported. It already has an internal SuperDrive.
I rebooted my iMac and the System Report did not show any SuperDrive. I shutdown my iMac, during startup I attached the SuperDrive and inserted a current DVD (TurboTax 2019). The system can now see the contents of the SuperDrive.
It appears that Catalina LOST the logic to allow you to plug the SuperDrive in while running. The boot logic still has the logic to see the SuperDrive, reset it and allow you to insert a DVD/CD. Apple needs to FIND the missing logic and put it back into Catalina.
There are two lasers, one for reading and one for burning. Try a cleaning disc in the drive - one that uses only a brush. There may be some dust on the burn laser or it could be slightly misaligned. The cleaning disc can help the first of those two possibilities.
I recently bought a superdrive to go with a Mac mini that I have. The mini is running Mojave 10.14.6 I also have a 2017 MBPro running the latest version of Catalina.
I have a collection of clip art stored as .pict files on CDs. If I plug the superdrive into the mini running Mojave, they mount just fine and are accessible to use.
If I plug the superdrive into the MBPro (using an Apple brand adaptor) the drive IS seen in system preferences and there is an eject icon on the menubar, BUT it will not mount and read these particular CDs at all. The disc spins up, makes a few noises then stops.
Apparently there are SOME data discs that Catalina refuses to see. It mounts audio CDs just fine and I have a DVD with audio files stored on it and it mounts that just fine.
i can read dvds but i can't burn dvds, i receive an error about laser calibration,
superdrive and imac late 2019
Already tried another usb-port? SuperDrive works on Catalina
