desktop arrangement

I have my desktop arranged by name. The items are backwards alphabetically. How can I reverse this. Also items are way off to the right. I would like them to be on the left.

MacBook Pro 15", macOS 10.13

I went to finder, clicked on desktop, which just brings up my list of files and folders on the desktop, not the actual desktop itself. So- making changes here only affects my list.

What is the next step - can you be more specific?

Thanks BDAqua for taking the time to help. Guess I will have to resort to your last suggestion. Never will figure why they just dong sort them alphabetically and on the left side in the first place. Do appreciate your suggestion.
