Is there a need to pair AirPods to Apple Watch?

My AirPods breakup a lot when I am on a call on my watch and get far from my phone. Do I need to set them up with my watch or did iPhone do that for me? Thanks!

Given what you described they are actually paired to your iPhone and not your Watch. Or your have a GPS only Watch that is only connected to your iPhone by BT and when you move away the Watch loses the call connection and breaks up.

If you want to use the AirPods with the Watch, which is connected to a trusted WiFi connection and supports WiFi calling pair the AirPods to the Watch.

Open Control Center and make sure that Bluetooth is on. Put both AirPods in thecharging case and make sure that both AirPods are charging. ... The status light should flash white, which means that your AirPods are ready to connect. If your AirPods don't connect, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case.
