Photos has a known fault with Named People on upgrade to Catalina

I was briefed last evening by an Apple senior support agent that Photos has a fault that has appeared between Mojave and Catalina, and that fault is around named people.

Imagine a photo of "Little Billy", a composite photo like parents put together with his sweet little face every Christmas for the past 10 years. Same kid appears 10 times in the photo.

Little Billy was detected by prior instances of Photos under Mojave and prior OS versions, and his name was below each picture with a circle around his face

On upgrade to Catalina, after Photos has done whatever upgrades it does to the library, several instances of Little Billy's name are now labelled "unnamed"

Attempts to name them "Little Billy" again look as if they work, but move away from that picture and move back and the name reverts to Unnamed.

This is the known fault, and one I and Senior Support Agent have been battling for several days.

Apple are working on this fault. I am told the fix is likely to arrive 'silently' as some future software update.

It seems logical to add your weight to this by making informed support calls to Apple, calls that simply show them the importance of the issue, but that is probably inessential

I thought I was going mad!!

I'm glad the issue has been noted, hopefully the fix will follow soon?

We are all very precious over our photo collection.

There has been no statement on timescale. I do not expect it soon,

The problem they have is not just the fixing of it, but the unwinding of the problems the upgrade has caused to a great many Photos libraries owned by rightly precious and irate users. A badly implemented fix is almost worse than the initial problem

This problem might have been introduced by a bugfix to solve the problem, that the icloud syncing of the named faces has previously resulted in merging the albums of two different people. Previously, on Mojave, I had frequently the problem, that photos showing two persons side-by-side (for example Mickey and Minnie) have resulted in the albums for Mickey and Minnie being merged and the photo has then shown two faces, both with "Mickey" as the name below them. I had suddenly hundreds of photos of couples in my library, where both people in the photo had been showing the same name and I had to split the merged people albums.

If the bugfix is using the heuristic, that photos taken with a camera cannot be showing the same person twice, unless they are standing in front of mirror or a photo or statue of themselves, it will prevent Photos from assigning the same name to several people in the same photo and the most common reason for merging the people albums of two separate people.

In my library the names in the photos with duplicate face names have also been reverted to "Unnamed".

For example, I had named the faces in this image "Buddha", and the names have all been removed.

I am no longer seeing any duplicate names at all, and no incorrectly named couples with merged names.

When I assign the name multiple times, it will be removed from all but one face after closing the photo:
