Not able to erase iPad 2 passcode

while trying to erase my iPad2 passcode(as I forgot) as per the instruction given in Apple's website

my iTunes say: iTunes could not connect to the iPad because it's locked with a passcode. You must enter passcode on the iPad before it can be used with iTunes

Are you doing the following from If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support

before and while you connect the iPad to the computer exactly as instructed in step 2 of that link?

Press and hold the Side (or Top) button until the power off slider appears. Drag the slider to turn off your device. Connect your device to your computer while holding the Home button. Keep holding the Home button until you see the recovery mode screen.
