Apple CarPlay Failed in 2019 Mazda CX-5

Hi there,

I started experiencing a problem with Apple CarPlay in my 2019 Mazda CX-5 since I updated to iOS 12.3 (on an iPhone 6S), and I have noticed this same problem on each iOS 13 version and subversion (currently on 13.1.3 and updating to 13.2 tonight which just got released).

I'll be in my car driving with CarPlay, with some audio playing such as Audible, Spotify, PocketCasts, when suddenly CarPlay will freeze up and restart the Mazda CX-5 infotainment system. When it restarts, CarPlay does not show up anymore as an option. I unplug and replug in my phone and a message banner on the top shows "Apple CarPlay Failed". What's interesting about this is that when trying to connect my phone through Bluetooth, it connects successfully but no audio streams through - however iOS is able to playback audio through its speakers.

I won't be able to reconnect to CarPlay until it has been turned off for ~15 minutes (which is the shortest time I've experienced for it reset). Otherwise as long as the car is turned on, CarPlay will no longer work. I suspect this to be an iOS issue due to the CarPlay software completely locking up and resetting and leaving the phone in a state where CarPlay will not work. When a friend tries plugging their phone in for CarPlay it does work! So the crash seems isolated to my phone which is why I'm reporting it here.

I noticed that another user experienced the same issue as me in July 2019 along with 15 other "I have this question too", but the only reply seems to be an auto reply from Apple support on how to use CarPlay, rather than reporting on the bug or issue that's at hand. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250522078

Would you be able to help me and other users out? This has been very frustrating to deal with when my CarPlay dies out 10 minutes into my hour long commute, giving me no ability to listen to my books/podcasts/music from my phone.

Thanks!

Keith

Same thing started to happen to me too. I have restarted and reset to the factory settings without restoring a backup and still plays up. Phone freezes and Siri goes mute. Agreed, this started to happen since the IOS 13.2.3 update and without warning. Any updates from Apple?

Hello Keithtiek,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. I understand that your iPhone won’t work in your car, and updating the software doesn’t help. I also see that the issue doesn’t happen when another iPhone is connected to your vehicle. I’d love to assist, and recommend that you follow the steps in the section, “If you connect using USB playback” here:

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod doesn't connect to or work in your car

If the issue continues, I recommend restoring your iPhone to factory settings using a computer. Be sure to have an iCloud or iTunes backup before completing this step. This support article explains how to restore: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

If the issue isn't reproduced with none of your personal data on your iPhone, you can then restore from your backup: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup. However, if it happens with none of your personal data on the device, contact Apple Support for further assistance: Get Support

I hope this information is useful. Kind regards.
