since updating to ios 13 my mac mail no longer syncs on iPhone

Since updating, whenever I delete mail from my inbox on one device, like my iPhone XS max or Macbook pro retina, the same emails just stay there in the inbox on the other device. I already checked that I have syncing active on all devices (ipad, iphone, macbook pro). But I have to keep repeating the process of deleting emails on all devices. Never had this issue before updating to iOS13 and Catalina. And i can't understand what's causing nothing to sync with respect to email. Thanks in advance for any help.
