Virtual keyboard bold-italic-underline selection

Since the update to iOS 13, when typing in a text box that supports the Bold, Italic, and Underline options, on the upper right of the keyboard, the choices no longer give a visual cue so you can tell you're using them.

It used to be if you tapped one of the options, it would be bolded, and could easily be toggled on or off. Now there is no visual cue, no change of the B I or U.

I also can't just choose to have one word out of a sentence take on one of the options. For example, I tried to make the capital letter B in the above sentence bold, but instead of just the change for the one letter, it bolded the entire sentence. Undo then deleted the entire sentence.

Is there a way to get those visual cues back? I'm using an iPad Pro 2nd gen, iOS 13.2. The same thing occurs on my iPad mini 4.
