Handoff not working in iOS / iPadOS 13.2 (again)

As per the title, after resetting network settings handoff stopped working between iPhone XS and iPad Pro (2018) and between iPad and MacBook Pro (2016). Between iPhone and Mac it seems still to work.

Things already tried based on other posts:

  • turned off handoff WiFi and Bluetooth on both devices
  • turned them off
  • turned them back on and activated the things in reversed order

also: toggled iMessage off/on on both devices.

No success.

What now?

iPhone XS, iOS 13

What helped me was removing the com.apple.Bluetooth.plist file from the Library/Preferences on my Mac, then turn off Wi-Fi (completely, deactivate it!), Bluetooth, Handoff on every device then restart your Mac and force restart your mobile devices.

it took me two attempts on iPhone because handoff had stayed on and Bluetooth had reactivated itself but then... it worked and has worked ever since!

I posted a thread on Reddit this morning and a response on there has provided a workaround. Bear in mind this was for Handoff not working from iPhone to iPad (it was working for me from iPad to iPhone).

On my iPad, I have the Settings > Home Screen & Dock > Show Suggested and Recent Apps in Dock toggle turned off. If I just toggle it on and off again my iPhone apps then appear in the Dock on the iPad to Handoff from.

Since updating to iOS 13 I have the same issue it seems. I can handoff from iPad to iPhone, but cannot handoff from my iPhone to iPad.

Handoff originally worked in both directions but after the iPad was shut down, handoff then stopped working from iPhone to iPad. The copy/paste clipboard between devices still works in both directions.

Tried turning handoff off and on again on both devices, restarting both devices, resetting network settings, turning Bluetooth and WiFi off and on again on both devices, signing out of iCloud and in again on both devices...all to no avail.

Start > General > Reset > Reset all settings on my iPad got it working in both directions again, but it doesn’t persist once the iPad has been switched off or rebooted (i.e. whether I shut down the iPad manually or when the iPad automatically reboots during the course of an iPadOS update - of which there have been plenty!). I’m then back to handoff only working from iPad to iPhone. The only way to get it working properly again is to reset all settings. But that’s a pain in the neck having to change all of the settings that have gone back to default.

Both devices are currently on 13.2.2 of their respective iOS and iPadOS.

(I have an open support case and Apple support took logs from both devices, but I’ve not heard from them since with any sort of update on the matter.)

Now, after a few days of blissful working, Handoff and Continuity between iPhone and iPad has broken again.

It works from iPad to Mac and viceversa but not between iPad and iPhone.

I tried what had helped back then (turning off BT and WF and Handoff and force restarting) but now it doesn't help anymore.

Also your suggested solution is not helping anymore.

I was so happy it worked few days ago and now I can just say "not again please..."
