AirPod Pro Microphone Call Quality

Since using the Airpod Pros this week and on calls people have been commenting on how they are having a hard time hearing me. This is something that never happened with my regular AirPods. From what I can gather it sounds like the external noise cancellation or noise reduction algorithm is getting confused with the noise outside and my voice and effectively cutting out or reducing my voice and boosting the background noise.

Are others running into this problem? The common complaint I’m getting when talking on the phone with the Airpod Pro is that the background noise is too loud.

Yes it is happening to me as well!! People say I am muffled and cannot hear me very well. 😡

I paid a lot for these and to have the Pro name there should not be any muffling when using the mic to talk!!! Come on Apple..........

(just saw this mentioned three pages ago, sorry for dupe..)

Interesting troubleshooting step is to see if the problem is for both left and right microphones. In settings > bluetooth > airpods pro, near the bottom is an option to choose to "auto select" the mic, or always use the left mic, or always the right mic. This is on iOS 14.

Recording some voice memos with either left or right microphone, I find that my right microphone seems broken, or at least produces way worse audio quality than the left one. As in "No wonder people on the other end of the call give up". Given that it's just one of them, I'm afraid this means a hardware issue with at least one of the three (?) mics in the right pod.

Curious if others here have the same problem in both pods, or just in one of them, and if/how Apple took care of it.

Not sure if this issue was resolved as I’ve had the same problem for a while now. I’ve read through some comments but haven’t seen any solutions. However, I did stumble across something and I hope Apple might be reading this.

What I’ve done was use only one AirPod pro, the right ear. As most of use tend to use the right ear to take calls. I’ve made sure that in accessibilities, under AirPods, that the noise cancellation is on for one air pod. I then proceeded to record a voice memo under noise conditions and found it solved the problem. I even went on a call and it was working properly, the other person could hear me perfectly. I haven’t tried the left ear but I’m assuming that it will work just the same.

I am sensing that when both AirPods are in, the software is getting confused between selecting a mic and cancelling background noise. Whilst with one AirPod, it works like it suppose to.

Apple if you’re reading this, please address this issue and provide a patch. I’m not 100% that this is the cause, but it’s a firm start.

Hi,

here's my test of Airpod Pros. I recorded myself on my phone using Airpod Pros. I spoke a little in my native tongue, then I put on some music from my laptop and continued talking. The quality of the music is quite good but my voice is completely INAUDIBLE in the background. Listen here (1 min): https://1drv.ms/u/s!AjkBPOBNj27Cg69GX5fi9Px17Ra6Cg?e=5jFdTf

I’m glad that this exact issue is being discussed. I recently bought AirPods Pro because I badly needed a Bluetooth headphones which I can use to take my office calls and make personal calls and talk to someone when I jog or when I’m making tea or anything. The worst part is the noise cancellation works for me amazing but others can hear every **** sound every noise around me everything is boosted up for them and they cannot hear anything unless I am a no vacuum chamber or something. Since this is not serving my main purpose I’m gonna return it

tried all the given fix but nothing worked. I did play a little bit with the AirPods and on my side it seems to be the quality of the isolation that is not good enough. When doing the isolation test with same tips since my purchase, it always told me to change them but I never had this issue before the new firmware. When listening to music, the isolation is perfect, I don't hear anything.

After updating to iOS 14.1 and AirPods Pro firmware 3A283, and unpairing, resetting, and re-pairing in the Apple approved way, I tried recording a voice memo again. Fun fact, you can switch the microphone (left side or right side) in bluetooth settings while recording the voice memo. For me the problem is still there, the right mic sounds terrible, the left mic sounds OK. This might be only part of the problem, because even with only the left (good) mic active the other person on the call still says the sound quality is terrible.

Conclusion, I ended up locating my original iPhone box and finally unpacked the wired headset, so now I end up switching headsets when taking calls! Very disappointing. :(

I’ve been having the issue since updating to iOS 14. I tried unpairing, cleaning microphone and when recording using the AirPods Pro on my iPhone XS Max the quality of the mic is still muffled. When recording in other devices the quality of the mic is perfect so I’m guessing this is an issue with iOS. I’m currently on iOS 14.1 and quality hasn’t improved.

I was seeing an apple genius for this. he said i should call him and say something. he walked away, came back and said he can hear me fine.

quite an unreliable test, if you ask me.

i have received numerous complaints about the sound quality when i am using the airpods pro. never do, when i use the phone directly or cable connected headphones with mic.

there seems to be an issue with the NEAR OR FAR FIELD. since we cannot change this in settings this needs to be added by apple. the mics pick up too much surrounding noise.
