AirPod Pro Microphone Call Quality

Since using the Airpod Pros this week and on calls people have been commenting on how they are having a hard time hearing me. This is something that never happened with my regular AirPods. From what I can gather it sounds like the external noise cancellation or noise reduction algorithm is getting confused with the noise outside and my voice and effectively cutting out or reducing my voice and boosting the background noise.

Are others running into this problem? The common complaint I’m getting when talking on the phone with the Airpod Pro is that the background noise is too loud.

Yes it is happening to me as well!! People say I am muffled and cannot hear me very well. 😡

I paid a lot for these and to have the Pro name there should not be any muffling when using the mic to talk!!! Come on Apple..........

I started having this problem since last month, once my AirPods Pro were around 6 months of use. Not only the microphone was underperforming in calls, sometimes there was a weird buzz coming from the right Airpod. The worst part of all is that it comes from thin air, without any common cause (water damage). I tried some of the solutions , such as forgetting and re-remembering the AirPods, but nothing worked so I give up and went to the repairing center.

In the end, they just changed the AirPods, so I suspect this is quite a common bug in the Pros and since they can’t open them apart, the best way is to just replace them.

I strongly recommend if you still want to buy these, buying also the Apple Care +, to cover these repairs after warranty, otherwise I would have spent around 100 dollars just for replacement....

I have the exact same problem. I like the pros for listening, but they are worthless for calls. If I am outside and there is a light wind or a passing car, nobody can hear me. I literally walk with my old wired earphones in case someone calls. I have tried the repairing method and that didn't fix anything. I am amazed to see over 4700 other people had these issues and no real response from Apple. Our stores in Hawaii are only just reopening, so it's hard to get in to see anyone and I certainly don't want them wearing them to test them in the days of COVID. Wish there was a well-known public fix...

Mine work fine, and I believe it corresponds to which way you paired your Airpods Pro when you first got them. If you pair them the way stated in the included instruction booklet, the microphone works fine. However according to many people, if you pair them via the bluetooth settings of your device, the microphone does not work properly. I don't know why this is the case but I suggest forgetting the Airpods Pro from your device, and re-pairing them, following the instruction booklet carefully.

Sorry, that’s simply not true. I’ve paired mine exactly as I should, even multiple times after reading about this “fix”, but it changes nothing: the microphones are still almost useless. They work fine when at home, inside, but any attempt to use them outside when there are other sounds (cars, wind, ...) around results in the person on the other side of the call not being able to hear me speaking.

I’m honestly extremely disappointed in my AirPods Pro :(

So I called in to Apple and got bounced between Chase(who I bought it through) and Apple. I called an Apple tech and they complained they couldn't hear me and I said "That's why I'm calling". She let me know that Air Pods Pro manufactured before October 2020 and before are facing recall. So if you have problems, contact them. I inconvenienced myself and went down to the store at 7:30pm and they checked them, paired them with their device and had me make a call. I couldn't tell if it was much better or not, but it seems the latest IOS update was out and I had to go home and install it to test it and try it out...so I installed the last update last night and I haven't tested it yet, but don't think it will have fixed anything. Then I have to go back to Apple and THEN take the thing and send it back to Chase for a replacement. What a pain...

Just to add to my previous comment: I now had ONE AirPod Pro (right one) exchanged - due to the warranty Programme by Apple for some AirPods Pro manufactured before October 2020. But during my first test call with the one new and one old AirPod Pro I realized: the problems still exist! Nobody could hear me. .... Unbelievable !

I have had exactly the same issue since buying my AirPods around April 2020. When I make phone calls the receiver tells me that they can’t hear me properly, and short of shouting there isn’t anything I can do to fix it. I have tried disconnecting and repairing as per apple instructions on multiple occasions but nothing has fixed the issue. Also they won’t maintain connection to my pc. With home working this year I had hoped to use them for work calls, but this isn’t possible. The audio for music however is really good, and sound cancelling but given the other downfalls they don’t hit the mark as an apple product.

Yeah... Same disappointment here. The mic on these things are TERRIBLE. I'm about to opt-out of the Apple ecosystem completely. This took me over the edge to be honest. There are just too many hang-ups..too many faults with their devices and accessories. What's really disappointing me is that I'm not seeing Apples response anywhere regarding this obviously failure. Back to the AirPods Pro...like my iPhone, they disregarded "user friendliness", once again, completely. You cannot put them in or take them out without hanging up on people most of the time. I mean, really. And don't get me started on the iPhone "functions"...oh goodness...I'd be writing a book right now. I'm pretty sure you guy's lost another one. Bye.

I’ve had the exact same issues with mine which were purchased in June. I paired them correctly with my 8+. In the end it was so bad I had them exchanged in December for another pair. Just as bad. I then upgraded to a 12 Pro Max to see if that made a difference. People simply can’t hear what I’m saying, especially if there’s any background noise. I get quiet and the background noise gets amplified, regardless of what setting they are on. They are simply not fit for purpose.

I have had the same problem, came across this answer. I too had initially paired the AirPods Pro through the Settings > Bluetooth interface, leading to the muffled microphones problem. So I did what was suggested: “Forget This Device” by clicking the i button on the right of the Airpod’s Pro listing in Settings > Bluetooth; then with the AirPods Pro in their case near your device, open the lid and follow the onscreen instructions. The microphone quality is now vastly better!
