AirPod Pro Microphone Call Quality

Since using the Airpod Pros this week and on calls people have been commenting on how they are having a hard time hearing me. This is something that never happened with my regular AirPods. From what I can gather it sounds like the external noise cancellation or noise reduction algorithm is getting confused with the noise outside and my voice and effectively cutting out or reducing my voice and boosting the background noise.

Are others running into this problem? The common complaint I’m getting when talking on the phone with the Airpod Pro is that the background noise is too loud.

Here's what I found. There are two ways to pair/connect the AirPods.

1) As described in the manual where you simply open the lid of the Airpods and bring them close to the iPhone then follow the instructions.

2) Where you go into your Bluetooth settings and search for and pair the Airpods the way you would do other Bluetooth devices.

The same 2 options also apply to subsequent connections after initial pairing.

When I pair or connect using Option 2 above, the telephone quality is awful for the person I'm calling as they hear background noise almost like it has been amplified. I suspect that is because if I connect to my AirPods this way, the noise reduction functionality doesn't work as expected.

When I connect or pair using Option 1, the sound quality is perfect for the person I'm calling and they hear little background noise.

I'm not saying this will help solve your own issues but I thought it might be helpful to share what I've found.

Thanks

Ian

So I have replied in the past and had my ipod pros replaced TWO TIMES. The first tech told me those produced prior to Oct 2020 were defective. The replacement pair didn't seem to work even though I was told they should be just peachy because they extensively test them. Nope. Defective. They sent me a THIRD pair. Same thing. Same problem. Unusable outside for phone calls. So I gave up. Today, I just got an idea and asked them when my pods were manufactured. Reply: Aug 2020. ARGH! WTF is wrong with Apple??? If they even tell you the ones produced prior to Oct 2020 were defective, why keep giving me the same cr@p over and over. Anyway, I have a fourth pair in transit. Fingers crossed.

hello guys!

First of all I love the airpods pro and I am glad that they are so much powerful technology

BUT

I did little bit research and unfortunately the microphone will not be better even if you will replace them for new. I saw one guy on youtube video who compare the all bluetooth earphones microphones and they all are very bad in my opinion 🤣 I am working in noisy environment and I have experience with both airpods and airpods pro. With the airpods I didn’t have issue with mic but since I upgraded to pro I just can’t call with them. It picking the other sounds and the person doesn’t hear me. I just can’t get it why the normal airpods has better mic even if they are on Bluetooth. Maybe because unfortunately it is sacrifice for cancel noise that they have. I am so happy that I have them because from this time I don’t hear the loud noise of the machines. Hope the airpods 3 will come with better mic.

I have never commented on one of these threads before. This issue however, is so frustrating, and the failure of the the air pods pro to achieve the most basic of functions (transmit audible sound during a call), is so glaring, that I must speak up. I bought a pair of these air pod pros for a friend for Christmas 2020. For the last 3-4 months we have been trying to figure out why her voice is inaudible during calls and why back ground noise is often times offensively loud. The answer is simple, this is a product fail. Further, the fact that over 7,000 persons have raised this issue and Apple have not had the decency or courtesy to respond, leads me to believe that there simply is no fix. I have not exclusively purchased Apple products but I have supported some of the things which they make (IPods and IPads specifically). That said, this experience leads me to believe that this company is failing its customers. By the way, my Bose QC earbuds are amazing at noise cancelling and have a great mic which is capable of filtering out background noise and keeping my voice level loud. See Apple? Its possible.

Completely agree with karinds, I absolutely regret Apple products. I don’t even think they care about our feedback. Had so many issues from my macbook pro (UI/UX) - they can’t even get simple things right and oh - they’d hate that if people don’t do it THEIR WAY! Absolute rubbish!!! Airpods pro mic quality is inferior to sony pods or other less-expensive items in the market! Not worth the price at all. People should not be buying Apple products. It’s a sham. I even wonder why i’m writing/ranting here when APPLE DOESN’T CARE ONE BIT!

Few months back I noticed that my voice fades in-between during calls, also I tested same by sending voice notes.

I went to Apple store then and they replaced my airpods stating that there is a Quality control program going on with some defective pieces(my 1 year warranty was expired)

I started noticing same after few months with new airpods, and today when I went to Apple store, they tested my airpods and both L & R sides failed their test, but unfortunately the quality program is no longer available and they couldn’t replace for free.

I thought of buying 2nd Gen Airpods Pro, before buying I did same voice notes test with new sample model in store itself and found that mic quality is still not very impressive, I was able to show the same to Apple store representatives and they kind of acknowledged it with new model as well.
