Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

More dropped calls since 4.0.1 update?

I was just trying to talk to my girlfriend on my drive home and the call dropped 4 times. I finally pulled off and tried talking to her with my phone laying still and on speakerphone and with 5 bars and 3G showing, it dropped the call 3 more times. Never had this happen until the 4.0.1 update.

Am I alone or have others noticed this?

So anyways back to the topic at hand, yes I realize the software update should theoretically have no impact on call performance. I also have no faith in bars, so I almost never look at them. I judge my call quality on two very simple metrics:

1) Can I make a call?
2) Will the call stay connected?

So far since the update Metric 1 has been just fine. I've been able to make calls for the most part, the exceptions being after my calls are dropped.

Unfortunately Metric 2 has gotten worse. I've had more dropped calls than I ever have with a phone since the 4.01 update. I'm hoping the free case Apple is offering will fix the issue, but it doesn't seem to be up on the site today. Of course this means I likely won't be able to return the phone since the 30 day window would end Saturday.

The idea of AT&T updating or tweaking its network seems like it could partially be a culprit, but it's happened too frequently and in too many different places for me to just blame the carrier. The only thing I could possibly think of is that somehow the way the phone handles lower signal readings may be causing the more frequent errors. I have no background in programming, hardware design or cellular networks, but I know when I'm not touching the phone and it drops a call there's something odd going on.

You're still here Vid? Shame on you. This is a peer to peer forum for people to get support, ask questions, etc., about their iPhone. You don't own an iPhone. You own a Samsung. Good luck with that. But the Samsung forum is where you should be blowing hot air to.......

So very clever, so very verbose.

So, while you guys are whining at each other, can we get back to the question?

I had an interesting development. A guy from Apple called me and asked if I could provide more information. They have, it seems, some kind of program where they can log all of my dropped calls and try to gain insight from there. I'm glad they're trying! Unfortunately, we've been playing phone tag since our first brief conversation. I was boarding a plane, so I couldn't complete the survey/information. I'm looking forward to hearing from him today and hopefully, being of help to the problem by sharing my problem/information with them.

If you still have the problem, maybe you guys can help too - I just called the regular 800 number and told them what was happening with my dropped calls getting worse with 4.0.1 and then this guy called me a few days later.

I'll let you know when I know more!

Since the update 95% of my calls when I had three or more bars worth of reception have been dropped the people I have spoken to that were on the other side of the conversation describe a weird gurgled noise before the call goes dead two of them being apple technicians I was on the land line for three hours today and the info I got from them was to restore my phone to it's factory settings I am not happy about this being I will loose all info on my phone and all downloads of my personal cd's all memos and text messages for me to go through them all will take more then a week!!! 😟 does anyone know of a better suggestion PLEASE THIS IS OUT OF CONTROL!

Ok - I'm part of the logging dropped calls crowd now. We're logging until Tuesday and then going to download my log and see if it helps Apple figure out some of the problem.

Here is one thing I learned FOR SURE:

If you have an AT&T Microcell - put it in line BEFORE your router.

Cable Modem - Microcell - Router - rest of your network. 100% difference.

No matter how much you think it is in the DMZ on your router, no matter how you've wired the network to give it max bandwidth, there are things that seem to occur on the microcell that cause it to get dumped.

On the upside, I've seen no bandwidth change on my network having it first. (I used Cat 6 cables just cuz.)

Will keep updating as I get info. Hope this is helping at least one person out there and I'm not just talking to myself...

I have a 3Gs, and delayed the update to 4.0.1 until 2 days ago. In the 1.5 years or so I've had the phone, I've never before had trouble with dropped calls, except for a few known locations. Since installing the 4.0.1 update 2 days ago It's been so bad that I checked online to see if it's a known firmware issue, and ended up here. The change in bars is cosmetic, I don't care about the bars. I routinely drive certain routes while on the phone, and know the locations of the few spots where I'm likely to drop calls. Since updating to 4.0.1 a couple of days ago, my beloved 3Gs has dropped calls multiple times during the same call, in areas which have always had strong signals.

Additionally, it seems to get stuck on a tower with a weak signal, or something. If I then fully shut down the 3Gs, and restart, the signal most often greatly improves. :\

Certainly ATT is overtaxed in San Francisco, and it could be that there are a pile of new ATT customers with new iPhones. That said, installing 4.0.1 resulted in frequent dropped calls in areas that have always been reliable.

I'm assuming that the next firmware update will fix the issue.

More dropped calls since 4.0.1 update?
