Chapters in my m4b audiobooks have disappeared

Audiobooks that I have copied to my iOS devices (sideloaded) don't contain chapters anymore when playing them back in the Apple Books app. The Books app on my Macbook Pro sees them just fine, showing chapters and allowing you to select between them. This is a recent occurence, as the chapters used to show in the iOS Books app during playback, and you could select between them just as in the MacOS app. Now each audiobook is just shown as one long book with no chapter markers even though they are present within the file. Audiobooks downloaded from the Apple store seem to not be affected; only M4B audiobooks that I have ripped myself. The files themselves are fine, since playing them through the Audible app on the iPhone shows the chapters. It is only the Apple Books app itself that has the issue. I have restarted the iPhone and the iPad both, but the problem persists using both iOS versions of the app.

I’m seeing the same thing here, and I’m not sure if it broke with Catalina or with

the 10.15.1 update, or perhaps even more specifically, based upon what I’ve

found below, with the 13.2 update for iOS . I’ve had quite a bit of success

with the Audiobook Binder app in converting MP3 files to M4B audiobook files

and importing them into Apple iBooks/Books and being able to see chapter

information on both OSX on the MacMini as well as on the iPhone with no issues.

This also extended to Audible protected .aa/.aax files which also showed

chapter details on both device platforms. Subsequent to the update, the Audible

audiobooks do not show chapter information; rather, they show one or perhaps

but a few large files only in the chapter display on the iPhone, even though

the chapters display perfectly as before on the OSX platform, so it is obvious

that the chapter information is still there in the file. It seems that the

iPhone iOS may be the culprit. As a temporary work-around, I’ve found combining

MP3 files aand checking the compilation of several artists checkbox on each of

the files in Music with unique track numbers, common Album and cover art and

the remember file location checkbox checked for all of the files applied can be

handled in the Music app as in the old iTunes days, then the separate MP3 files

dragged onto the desktop within a folder, and then that folder would be dragged

from the desktop right into the Apple Books app. The newly-created book will

show as an audiobook when synced with Finder to the iPhone. The audiobook seems

to be retaining bookmark locations. I tested this by shutting off the phone and

rebooting it, went back into the audiobook and the file picked up where it left

off before I shut down the phone. Audible books, well that’s another story…think

we may have to wait for a bug fix on that one. Please forgive me if I feel for

that as if I’m waiting for a bus that’s never going to come. Interested to hear

what others’ experience with this is.

The plot thickens. I updated the iOS software on my iPhone X to the latest version, 13.2.2. My iPhone 11 Pro Max has the same software version. The chapters are completely intact on the iPhone X, and are completely gone on the iPhone 11. Thinking the new Catalina Finder transfer method may be the culprit (the iPhone X had received the audiobooks using the older iTunes method), I pulled two audiobooks with chapters off my iPhone X and copied them to my iPhone 11 using Easus Mobimover software instead of Catalina Finder. When I opened both audiobooks on the iPhone 11, all of the chapters were gone. This leads me to think that iOS is indeed the culprit, but it differs by which hardware you are using the iOS software on. This chapter issue is the same on my Ipad Pro, but I haven't tested it using my older iPad 3 yet to see if the results are similar.

I just updated to iOS 13.2.3 on my iPhone 11 Pro Max today, and the problem is still there. I went to the App store to see when the last time the iOS Books app was updated, but it had no such information available. I am not sure if the Books app gets updated with each iOS update, or if it is updated separately like the other iOS apps, and they just don't publish update dates for the app in the app store.

I've actually had a ticket open with Apple on this for the past 1.5 weeks -- bottom line --

If its not an apple product (from the Apple book store not the audible book store) engineering doesn't care.

They had be jump through a bunch of hoops, make videos, screenshots, etc. and then didn't even look at them and come back with more stuff that I had already done.

Not sure if its intentional on Apple's part or not to try to get people to buy audio books from the apple book store or not, but they made a customer very unhappy here. I have 400+ audible books, and none of them have chapter marks anymore -- worked fine in iOS 12 and iOS 11 -- stopped working in iOS 13 -- on Both an 11 Pro, 8 Plus, and MacOS Catalina.

I'm running the latest and greatest 11Pro - 13.3

All apps are up-to-date.

I tested by going into Books app on my Mac, deleted all the books.

Synced the phone via USB cable

Confirmed all the books were gone.

Reimported all the books into Books on the Mac.

Once done, synced with iPhone again.

After that all the books were back on the iPhone, and the chapter markers were there.

I believe you can disregard my previous post that I posted today. If I follow your reply correctly, if I have updated to Catalina 10.15.2, and then resync my audiobooks to my iPhone, the chapters then reappear within the iOS Books app. At first I misinterpreted your reply. I’ll try resyncing to my iPhone tonight using the updated Catalina. It’s interesting that the problem was with Catalina the whole time!

I also confirm M4B files now show their chapters running iOS 13.3 on an iPhone X while running MacOS 10.15.2 on a MacBook Pro. I have a test M4B file that did not show chapters after the Catalina update though it did before the update, that now shows its chapters again as of these software update versions.

I also made an M4B audiobook out of 10 MP3 files using the "AudioBookBinder" app (purchased from the App Store) which, when imported into Apple Books and synced to the iPhone, now shows all chapter markers today whereas after the initial Catalina update they did not show: only a single large file showed. I held on to it to test in each software update, and with this one, it finally works.

No change on Audible protected .aa/.aax content. At this point I'll take what we can get; gift horse in the mouth, etc.
