just got new phone and have been charging battery but the battery icon is still red... will it eventually turn green? It has been charging for a long time... is this normal for a new phone

No, it should be green after it's charged to 20%. Are you using the charger and cable that came with the phone? If you are plugging into a computer or other USB device try plugging into the wall directly.
