ios 13.2 deleting podcasts randomly

I recently upgraded to iOS 13.2 on my iPhone XS. Since then, my phone has deleted 1200 podcast episodes four separate times. These are podcast episodes I loaded onto my phone myself, not podcasts that I am subscribed to through iTunes. None of these episodes had been played. Twice it happened while I was listening to a podcast. Suddenly the podcasts just stopped playing and the episodes were gone. When I connected my phone to my MacBook, the episodes automatically re-synced to my phone since they were unplayed. My podcast settings have not been changed between iOS13.1 and 13.2 (or for years for that matter) -- they are set to auto delete off my phone once played, but again none of these have been played.

Seems like this is a bug in iOS 13.2. Has anyone else experienced this? Since I don't lose the files, it is more of an annoyance than anything to have to re-sync with my MacBook, but it is annoying nonetheless. Just another of the many bugs I continue to find with Apple products.

I just wanted to update with my experience of switching podcasts over to audiobooks in an attempt to bypass these deletion problem.

I am running Mojave on a MacBook Air with the good version of iTunes before Apple destroyed it (and podcasts) in Catalina.

I converted all of my podcasts that were not part of an RSS feed over to audiobooks and play them through the Books app. I was able to edit the metadata as needed to get the files in the order I wanted and everything has worked perfectly. I am able to play them back at the speed I want, unlike being stuck with normal speed if they were classified as music. None of my files have deleted, and I am still able to use the podcast app for any podcasts I listen to that download through RSS feeds straight to my phone. I no longer worry about syncing podcasts with my MacBook Air.

The main reason I did not switch to Catalina when it first came out was because Apple destroyed the podcast functionality. You could no longer import your own audio files into Podcasts, and you cannot import files into Music and then change their classification to podcast to backdoor the files into the podcast app.

Once I figured out audiobooks is a good workaround, I decided today to upgrade from Mojave to Catalina. Mistake. Apple also destroyed the functionality of Books on the Mac. Now if you have an audiobook, you cannot see the chapter names in Books on the computer. All you see is the title of the audiobook and the length, and you cannot edit the metadata at all. So if you import your own files into Books, you will not be able to edit the metadata to make sure they are named right, in the right order, etc.

So I have downgraded back to Mojave and plan to stick here until Apple's developers decide to stop breaking things and trying to be so creative and "smart" that they forget about the end user.

If anyone has any workarounds to any of the problems I mention above in Catalina that I may be missing, please let me know.

Okay, there a way to get this resolved,

you need to make note of the exact time it happens and have an Apple service fella run a diognostics, do tell him to send the diognostics data to the Apple engineers so they can look what’s wrong with the app.

TELL THEM THE EXACT TIME, so they know where to look.

if a lot of people do this they’ll finally fix it,

also send them to this discussion thread to let them know that It’s prevalent on all devices on IOS 13.2 and above.

I agree, it is easy, and everything you say is true. But there still might be some minor edits you have to make after changing media type, especially if listening to things in order matters. I had to edit some of the metadata after I changed them from podcast to audiobook because for some reason, itunes put things out of order for a handful of files, even though all of the files were uniformly named, numbered, and properly ordered by date while in podcast form.

In most cases, to get them in the right order, I had to open the metadata for the files out of order, delete the last letter of the title, retype it, and then hit ok. That put it in the right order. Otherwise the file would not go in the right order. Such a weird glitch but that's Apple these days I guess. That's another reason why I won't use Catalina - because you can't edit the metadata for individual files in audiobooks in Catalina anymore.

Bottom line, it is very easy to change from podcast to audiobook and you can do every single file at once. But there might be some minor cleanup needed after the fact. It's definitely worth it though.

I am still having the same problem as well. My belief is that the glitch occurs when I open another app on the phone. The last 4 times it has happened to me while I was actually listening, it happened at the exact moment I opened another app. It was a different app each time. It never deletes all of the episodes, just a huge majority of them. They immediately re-sync when I connect to my MacBook. I have not yet heard back from Apple Support even though it has been 9 days since I talked to them.

kenman40 - You may have already checked this, but your mention of “3 episodes” per podcast was very specific. In each podcast’s settings, there’s a “Limit Episodes” option that can be turned off. By default, I think it’s set to 3. I had to figure that out as a result of a different problem that I was having.

It’s somewhat encouraging that you actually received a response and it seems sort of consistent with the disaster that is podcasts in Catalina (since you can’t add any of your own episodes into podcasts anymore). But I still don’t think they know what they are talking about. I base that on two things: 1) the deletion to my podcasts happens to podcasts that are unplayed and still in the feeds, as well as unplayed podcasts I added myself not part of any feed and 2) what is deleted changes every time and it’s almost never all of it. It’s just randomly deleting certain episodes of certain podcasts, not even all of one podcast. I think they screwed up and have no idea how to fix it, and don’t care.

I should add my own personal speculation is that there is a bug in the code and certain apps interact with the iOS causing a glitch that deletes things. I am no engineer and have no idea how to program anything, but I frequently see deletions occur upon opening and switching between apps. Sadly it’s not always the same apps such that I can delete the app and not have it happen. But for me it has happened upon opening native Weather, Words with Friends, Clash of Clans, And Safari - and those are the ones I know because the episode I’m listening to has disappeared along with others upon opening those specific apps.

I agree, I think they misunderstand. There is no way this is a feature for a very simple reason:

It happens on iPods Touches on the road. iPod Touches CANNOT connect to a cellular network. It's literally impossible. So if this is a "feature" then that means that anytime an iOS device doesn't have access to an Internet connection then podcasts should be deleted because they aren't in the feed? That's every podcast by default! The entire reason I have podcasts on my iPod Touch is so I can listen to them on the road when I travel and away from home.

Do they intend for all podcasts to be deleted because the device they made doesn't have cellular capability and can't reach a feed?

Do they intend to take away podcasts we want to listen to because there isn't a feed of them available?

Why would iOS care if a feed for the podcast is available or not? It is on the device for a reason. Because I want it there so I can to listen to it. Why would you take it away?

You all are awesome. Thanks for keeping up the fight!

Excellent summary, smamm.

As someone who has converted thousands of podcast files over to audiobook format, I'll just add that despite the similar concerns I had about making all those conversions, since my metadata was in good condition, they converted quickly and without any problems at all. But I am meticulous (some might say an@l) about the accuracy and detail of my metadata, so I had spent a lot of time beforehand getting everything to where the conversion was literally just changing the media type from podcast to audiobook.

Hope Apple finally fixes this someday, but I am not sure they care (about this or a lot of other details anymore).

I'm not sure why you had to convert anything to listen to the podcasts in the 'Books' app 🤔 I literally just opened up the information window on the podcast episode within itunes, and changed the 'Media Type' dropdown menu from 'Podcast' to 'Audiobook', and then it just showed up in the 'Audiobooks' section on iTunes, and I could sync it to 'Books' from there 🤷🏽‍♂️
