Strange audio options on phone and devices

My iPhone now gives me "audio" choices when I use the speaker for phone calls. I posted elsewhere about this problem as it has never happened before and it's annoying when I just want the phone to quickly go to speaker. One of the choices is "living room" which happens to be the name of my Apple TV. So why would I want my phone audio to go to my Apple TV, which is not even in use?

Further, on my MacBook Pro, I just noticed that I get a new option when I use Quicktime to record, as below. Same thing, "living room". My Apple TV has neither a camera or a microphone (unless the remote counts as a mic), so why is Quicktime suggesting that I can use Apple TV to record video and audio? All of this behaviour is recent. Never had these confusing and pointless options. Sometimes iMac comes up as option too. I just want to turn these off and not have "audio" as a choice on my phone, but just speaker, like it used to.

Handoff includes a number of features like being able to continue using an app on another computer. I don't want to turn that functionality off. I have some Amazon Alexa's in the house, and one is in the living room, but no bluetooth is paired to it and even unplugging it doesn't fix the issue.

I did not have the Home app on my phone, but I just downloaded it to make sure. Apple TV was listed there, so I deleted it anyway, but it didn't help. Further, if I try to use Living Room, it doesn't even connect, so it doesn't work if I want it to. This happens on two iPhones, so it's not unique to just mine, by the way.

Okay, I have not solved this problem, but I have an answer as to why this does not work.

After much research, I finally spoke to an advisor who told me that this is a new function of Airplay 2. That is, to offer this audio option which does not work. It's not meant to work because you cannot send audio from a phone call to your Apple TV, but the audio is recognized as an Airplay option anyway.

This is annoying as I would rather just switch to speaker immediately, with the two step process. There is no functionality in giving me an option which actually does not function, so I wish Apple could fix this and have it like it was before Airplay 2.

i_rina, not sure who you are or if you work for Apple, but all the advise you gave below is incorrect. Nothing to do with Bluetooth. The issue happens when Bluetooth is off. It's not continuity either. While I appreciate your attempt to help here, you really should not just post things which are clearly wild guesses without saying so. It just confuses people.

Hi Cartoonguy,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! I understand you are seeing additional audio options while on a phone call. I'd like to shine some light on this.

When you have paired Bluetooth devices set up on your phone, or compatible devices setup in the Home app (such as your Living Room), your device detects this and it is expected for these other devices to be listed as an audio option when tapping 'audio' on the active phone call: While on a call on iPhone - Apple Support.

If it were a paired Bluetooth accessory showing up on the list, you would unpair the Bluetooth device to stop it from showing up. But since 'Living Room' is related to your Home app, there really is no way to remove it other than removing 'Living Room' from your Home setup. I would recommend leaving feedback to Apple on this behavior: Product Feedback - Apple.

Thank you for your post.

Take care.

Cartoonguy,

Thanks for following up.

When it comes to your iMac showing up as an audio source, you could check to make sure you have Continuity set up so your Mac can be used for phone calls as well: Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support. It's detected when you are near your Mac, and its on the same network as your iPhone.

In regards to the Living Room option in audio, do you have any other products set up in your Living Room that have a microphone? If so, your phone may be sensing that product instead. If you look into manufacturer documentation, you may be able to learn more about using the microphone on your other product, if compatible. Set up and use the Home app - Apple Support and iOS - Home Accessories - Apple provide more details about the Home app and compatible products.

Regards.

Thanks for trying to explain, but in my experience, it just doesn't make any sense. My Apple TV shows up as an audio option, but choosing it does nothing, so it's useless. Oddly enough, when I have the Apple TV on, that is my TV on showing Apple TV, the option no longer appears and the phones says "speaker" instead of "audio". Sometimes I get "iMac" showing up, but not always. If I choose "iMac" you would think audio would play through the iMac, which actually might be handy for a conference call, but does it? No. And as I say, it only gives me this option sometimes anyway, so it's totally unreliable even if it did work.

So if I can't turn the function off, a function which never appeared before iOS13 for me, then how do I get it to even work?

This will work, but functionally, it does not work because it means you no longer have access to the things which iCloud give you, like your movie library, photos syncing from my iMac for viewing on the TV and using your phone as a remote (useful for typing text). So for that reason, for me, it's not a workable solution, but thanks for the suggestion.

I’m in the exact same boat. I have “Living Room” listed as an audio source when answering a call. If I press on “Living Room”, it shows the Bluetooth icon, but has no functional use. I have tried literally everything, and the strange thing is, even when I’m not at home, sometimes the “Living Room” option is listed as an audio source while on a call. I have literally went through every option, that makes sense, and to no avail. Please Apple Support, fix this in the next update ASAP! It’s added frustration to a simple process of answering or making calls where a user should be able to press the “Speaker” icon, rather than additional audio sources that can’t be removed expeditiously and efficiently. Thank you
