Check the AirPrint list for your printer model. If supported, you do not need Canon drivers, unless there is an integrated scanner (MFP device). The printer must be powered on and connected to the network so Apple's Bonjour can detect it.

If you already have added the printer and it appears in the Printers panel of System Preferences : Printers & Scanners, select that entry and right-click on it to choose Reset printing system… from the secondary menu. You will need an administrator password, and then you can add the printer back with the + button.

In a few seconds, your printer will be discovered, and the Use: selector should be set to AirPrint, or your particular printer model, depending on AirPrint support. Then click Add, and your device will be in the Printers panel again. Right-click on it, and select Set Default printer. Print something.

It is a brand new printer would it need an update?

That's not the way any of this works. Not at all.

A brand new iPhone arriving from Apple can absolutely need a software update.

New printers that need driver or firmware updates? That definitely also happens.

Visit the vendor site for the device, and locate the most recent drivers, and the most recent firmware for those devices with loadable firmware.

If something goes weird, always check that the drivers and the firmware are current.

There seems to be a driver from last month available here:

https://ph.canon/support/PIXMA%20G3000/model

There's a full driver package at:

https://ph.canon/en/support/0100700002/7—Canon

There's no support listed for Catalina listed in that package, which either means there's a documentation error, or there's no support. The lack of feedback from Canon implies it's the latter, too.

Which again leads to the suggestion of a return of this printer, and a different replacement.
