i have an Epson XP 830 which will not communicate with my computer since I upgraded to Sierra. Is there anything I can do short of buying a new printer?

For Airprint printers, it’s usually possible to avoid loading any drivers for printing. This is an AirPrint printer.

If you want to load drivers for other purposes, load the latest drivers directly from the printer vendor.

Failing that, remove the printer, reboot, and re-add the printer, and try again.

If that fails, boot into Safe Mode and try printing again, as that disables various add-ons. Some add-ons can cause flakiness.

There’s a printer subsystem reset operation, but that’s a yet bigger hammer.

If all that fails, check directly with the vendor support folks.

Sierra is no longer supported by various apps, and no longer getting security updates from Apple.

Of the various printer vendors for potential replacement, Brother is the local preference.

Printers are neither 32- nor 64-bit.

The drivers are the hunks of 32- and 64-bit software involved here.

And it’s the drivers that need to be 64-bit, for Catalina.

Wouldn’t surprise me to learn that some of the printer vendors are trying to decide which of their legions of printers really need driver updates and which can be deprecated, so check with the printer vendor if there are no 64-bit drivers available.

And the use of an AirPort path or an IPP/IPPS path—for printers that support either or both of those interfaces—can avoid the need for add-on drivers.
