I am using my brand new airpods, listening to music at normal volume, but when a call notification comes in, or the timer goes off, the volume is DEAFENING! I don't see a way to adjust the notifications volume independent of the music volume. Any tips? I have an iPhone 6 with iOS 12.4.3 (newer system iOS 13 is unavailable for this phone.)

You can adjust the volume of alert sounds in Settings > Sounds (& Haptics). There should be slider titled "Ringer and Alerts" and an option to change the volume with the volume buttons: Adjust the volume on iPhone - Apple Support.
